Crime and Punishment in Antigone
Crime and Punishment is shown in Antigone through multiple people and events. One way is through Polyneices. He betrayed Thebes, and therefore his punishment was to not have a proper burial. The second way was through Antigone giving Polyneices a burial, for she was then sentenced to death. Her crime was breaking the law, and her punishment was death. Another was mentioned about Oedipus. His crime was marrying his mother, and the punishment was a curse on the family. The last was was through Creon. His pride was his crime, and his punishment was the loss of his son and wife.
Quotes from Antigone
- "...Polyneices, they fought as bravely and died as miserably,-- they say that creon has sworn no one shall burry him, no one shall mourn for him..." (Antigone, 17)
- "...Polyneices, who broke his exile to come back with fire and sword against his native city and shrines of his fathers' gods, whose one idea was to spill the blood of his blood and sell his own people into slavery--- Polyneices, I say, is to have no burial..." (Creon, 165)
- "This girl is guilty of double insolence, breaking the given law then boasting of it. Who is the man here, she or I, if this crime goes unpunished?" (Creon, 380)
- "You have touched it at last: that bridal bed, Unspeakable, horror of son and mother mingling: their crime, infection of all our family!" (Antigone. 694)
- "Her curse is upon you for the deaths of both." "It is right that it should be. I alone am guilty." (Messanger, Creon, 1020)
Modern Day Example: He Is We, Kiss It Better
Her hands are so cold,
And he kisses her face
And says, “Everything will be all right."
He noticed the gun,
And his rage grew inside.
He said, “I’ll avenge my lover tonight”.
And she cried,
"Kiss it all better,
I’m not ready to go.
It’s not your fault love,
You didn’t know, you didn’t know."
Now he sits behind prison bars,
25 to life and she's not in his arms.
He couldn’t bring her back with a bullet to the heart
In the back of a man who tore his world apart.
And he kisses her face
And says, “Everything will be all right."
He noticed the gun,
And his rage grew inside.
He said, “I’ll avenge my lover tonight”.
And she cried,
"Kiss it all better,
I’m not ready to go.
It’s not your fault love,
You didn’t know, you didn’t know."
Now he sits behind prison bars,
25 to life and she's not in his arms.
He couldn’t bring her back with a bullet to the heart
In the back of a man who tore his world apart.
