All-Star Announcements
Learning at Home Edition, April-May 2020
Thank You, Teachers, Staff & Families!
In the last two months, our community has creatively adapted to the challenge of teaching and learning from home. Our teachers have redesigned instruction and have adopted new technologies to try to keep students connected with us, with peers, and with learning. Bus drivers and nutrition staff have packed and delivered thousands of meals to students. Custodians, instructional assistants, and office personnel have kept buildings safe and maintained key operations. Parents and caregivers, your jobs have become so much more complex, and you have worked with us and helped us understand what works and doesn't work for your family. During teacher appreciation week, I want to highlight the work our students have been doing during quarantine. Now even more than ever, this work is a collaborative effort between home and school. Thank you, all!

Book Drive Through Next Thursday (5/14/20)
If you have any gently used children's books that are no longer being read in your home, please consider dropping them off in one of the bins in the back of the school. We will collect books through Thursday, May 14. We are accepting picture books and chapter books that are appropriate for preK-4th graders. We will have them available for others when we coordinate classroom materials pick-ups later in the month.
Classroom Materials Pickups
Our teachers are coming in at staggered times to pack up their classrooms and organize student materials and belongings that were left at school. Each student will have a bag to pick up, along with an art portfolio. This will also be a time to drop off library books, recorders, and other school materials you have at home (not Chromebooks). Families will receive an email from Dr. Kershner as soon as a grade level is all packed up and ready to disburse items. We will organize the pick-up similar to the other distribution events we've had recently. We hope to start that process sometime the week of May 18. Stay tuned!
Google Meets with Dr. Kershner
Parents and caregivers are invited to join Dr. Kershner for one of two Google Meets scheduled for next week (5/12 at 8pm and 5/15 at noon). Please check the Official Parent Calendar for the links to the meetings--they are unique for each meeting. It was helpful the last time we met to have questions and concerns posed in advance, so I am asking again for you to complete this quick survey so that I can know what's on your mind and be prepared to address those issues and concerns.
Report Cards
While we did not send home report cards for quarter 3, you will be receiving a narrative report that summarizes your child's performance through March 13 and progress noted since then. Report cards will be mailed the week of June 8.
Registration for the 20-21 School Year
Kindergarten registration is now open for all students who will be new to Charlottesville City Schools in the 20-21 school year. If your child attended a CCS pre-school, you will complete the re-registration process for kindergarten. This form has not yet been activated on the schools' website.
All students returning to Venable or Walker for next school year will be asked to re-register online soon. It will be done through Powerschool.
