WIZARD WEEKLY
Week of April 17-21
WORD FROM THE EMERALD CITY
~ Thanks to EVERYONE who came out to the color run on Thursday! It was a GREAT event!! A HUGE shout out to Leslie and Melanie for working so hard to get everything organized. The kids had a blast, and it was great weather and a lot of fun!
~As students/parents begin talking about ILT opening up, make sure to advocate for our school district and public (regular public ed) schools in general. Remember to encourage them to do their research and ask tough questions!
~We have our continuous improvement staff introduction in the library today after school. This will be approximately 45 min- hour. Please come ready to hear what it is, what the expectation for you will be, and ready to see examples on HOW do use it in your classrooms. Shout out to Shannon and Nicole for working to give you a brief intro to this and allow you into their rooms to see how they're using it this year.
~ The end of the year awards celebration is tomorrow during the lunch hour. I will be off campus, along with Bobby, Robin, Kelley Lawrence, Jessica, and Terri. We want to congratulate all of our award winners again and also want to recognize Robin, who has announced her retirement at the end of the year. She will be recognized tomorrow for her service in EMS-ISD for the past 16 years.
~ Make sure you check the calendar below for important dates, and always let me know if I miss something and/or something needs to be added.
~ Teacher Appreciation Week is just around the corner, May 1-5. We have some great treats in store for you during the week. PTA has some fun things planned as well. Right now, plan on letting us provide you with breakfast on Monday and Tuesday, Lunch will be provided on Wednesday and Friday, and special treats such as Kona Ice and Sonic throughout the week! And...don't forget about our drawings for special gifts each day! We definitely appreciate ALL of our staff and want to show you all how much!!
Campus News
~The kindergarten transportation parade is this Friday at 2:00! This is SUCH a fun event, and something I know everyone looks forward to watching each year. The route will be shorter this year, since we have less kids. The kindergarten teachers will be sending out specifics, so everyone knows where to be in order to have a good view.
~ Muffins with Moms is May 5th. The invitations should go out tomorrow. We will need to get an approximate RSVP number, so that we know how many muffins to buy. I will send another note next week with an RSVP attached.
~ Kindergarten Roundup is May 1st from 3:30-6:00. If you have older children who need service hours or would like to volunteer, please let me know. We will have tours of the building and various stations set up (snacks, academic screening, registration, etc.) that we could use some extra hands, if there are willing volunteers.
~ Teachers/professional employees, make sure to turn in the professional development plan for the summer to myself and/or Bobby. Bobby is passing them out during his summative meetings, and I put them in boxes of those who I appraise.
~ Our next round of STAAR testing is just around the corner. Please know that we MAY have to call on some teachers in the younger grades to help administer the test. Once you find out if you are giving the test, please make it a point to get with the student's teacher and find out some specifics about the student. Sometimes the small group teachers don't know the student but then test them for 2 or 3 days. Talk with the teacher and find out if he/she needs reminders, frequent breaks, what things they need to watch out for, etc. This helps to know what to expect and what to look for, especially if it's a student who you may not know very well or know at all. Also, plan to introduce yourself to the student so he/she will feel a little more comfortable the day of the test. The kids are nervous and anxious, so moving to a new location with a new person can often add to that stress.
Be Vocabulous!
Continue to discuss the vocabulary with your students! It's making a big difference!
Here is the copy of the s'more newsletter about the vocabulary program. It has all the words listed for the year, so you can plan ahead! It has each word listed and the grade level responsible. The kids really enjoyed this last year, and I think this was something I had more comments from parents about than anything! They would comment about their students knowing the meanings of words that they didn't even know. The vocabulary parade was a big hit too. Even the older kids got into it and had fun being creative and participating.
Please turn in the "Word Up" Levels sheets when you have students who display the appropriate use of the words. Obviously, the younger they are, the more "adaptation" needs to occur in order to receive the levels, but the students who received the tags last year, LOVED it!! I will put the "Word Up Level" sheet on canvas!
As a reminder, the way the "Word Up Levels" work, goes like this...
All students will start as rookies and all students will have a chance to move up as many levels as they would like. Spirit Tags (that PTA is selling) will be used for levels 2 thru 5 and when a student reaches level 2 thru 5 they will receive a spirit tag for that level from the principal.
Teachers will nominate students to move up through the levels.
