Fourth Grade: Huki and Ku’i Kalo

by Ms. Yonekura

We had a very special and fun experience with Kumu Ku’uipo, which took us back to Ancient Hawai’i. The kalo plant was a very special plant to the Hawaiians which provided them with life and nourishment. Kalo was a staple food to the Hawaiians. We learned how to huki (pull) and Ku’i Kalo (pound kalo into poi).

First, we harvested our kalo that we have been growing in our 4th grade garden beds. We cleaned and prepared kalo for the ku’i process. Kalo needs to be steamed before we are able to ku’i. Kumu Ku’uipo did a demonstration on how poi is made. We were able to taste test our kalo, which was very ono (delicious)! There were several different varieties we got to taste and each had a very specific flavor. Mahalo Kumu Ku’uipo for perpetuating the Hawaiian Culture within our 4th grade students!

STEM Fun FEST

Our Cane Fire Robotics program hosted a virutal STEM Fun FEST

(FEST=Families Exploring STEM Together) on February 23, 2022. The discovery and hands-on STEM experience was presented by Art and Rene Kimura. Under the Kimura's guidance, the students did various STEM activities such as building brushbots, a Cartesian diver, and a miniature turbine. Between activities, the students saw videos about STEM in action. We hope you are inspired to pursue a STEM-related career in the future!
