24th Annual Golf Tournament
Golfers were able to enjoy a day at Olde Homestead Golf Course while raising money for Carbon Lehigh Special Needs Children's Foundation.
B-Club enjoys Trexler Camp
Boys' Club is pictured here at Trexler Camp! The boys have shot archery, made crafts, hiked, fished, and even encountered a skunk!
G-Club experiences Camp Mosey Wood
Girls' club is seen here paddling around the lake at Camp Mosey Wood. The girls enjoy their time at Mosey Wood doing things like wall climbing, hiking, crafting, and of course, sharing s'mores.
Retirement Celebration brings smiles
Our retirees deserve nothing but the best, and that is what we try to give them at our retirement luncheon! They were able to talk with co-workers, enjoy lunch, watch a video dedicated to them, and even receive a gift from work based learning students. Best of luck!
Deaf/HOH celebrate end of school year at Wehr's Dam Park
It was the perfect day for some fun in the sun, and that's just what this group did at Wehr's Dam Covered Bridge Park! Kids from our deaf and hard of hearing program gathered here today for food, fun and games outside to celebrate the end of a productive school year and bid the seniors farewell.
Life Skills showcase student talent at Jim Thorpe Opera House
These life skills students were able to strut their stuff at Jim Thorpe Opera House! The show was exciting and inspiring. There was dancing, flag twirling, singing, and more! Congratulations to all who came and performed!
Ms. Dinardo's class goes to STEAM Expo!
Amie DiNardo's class from Orefield Middle School, part of our deaf/HOH program, presented at the 1st Annual STEAM expo! The group presented to 5th grade Parkland students about how hearing loss occurs and what technology is available to help individualize with this need. Great job!
Ms. Seng's students meet with Salisbury baseball players
Salisbury High School baseball players stopped by Jane Seng's classroom to present a student, James, with an autographed baseball and hat. James was so happy to receive these gifts and communicate with members of the baseball team!
Peter Langman talks with staff about violence in schools
Peter Langman Ph.D, author of "Why Kids Kill" and the more recent "School Shooters" came to the IU to talk with the Emergency Preparedness Council about the psychology of school shooters. Though we hope this kind of incident will never come to fruition, we are glad to have had the opportunity to hear Dr. Langman shed some light on the subject.
LVEC recognizes area employers
The Lehigh Valley Employment Coalition gathered with area business leaders for breakfast and awards. These particular businesses were recognized for being disability friendly and employing young adults with intellectual disabilities. Christina Saraceno, a young adult, spoke about the importance of employment for people with disabilities. (Wood plaques were prepared by Youth Forestry Camp students.)
Kids learn to fish at annual Fishing Party
At Germantown Grove, many of our students participated in the annual special needs Fishing Party. Students were able to work with a guide who helped them catch fish, then prepare them at the filet station. Though we saw a few groups struggle to find a fish, we saw lots of smiles along the way!
Spring
Students work their mental math muscles with Math 24
Students grades 4-8 compete to win the Math 24 Challenge and advance to the state competition. With this game, cards of varying difficulty are laid on the table and kids needed to use math skills to attain a solution of 24. As the competition neared the end, cards become more complicated to solve, with dual rings and missing numbers challenging players even more.
Regional Computer Fair brings stiff competition
This year's Regional Computer Fair brought graphic design, web page design, coding, animation, and digital video creatives to the forefront. Winners in each category advanced to the state competition. Students have a set of guidelines to abide by, including following copyright laws and other appropriate use rules.
High-schoolers think fast for Academic Competition
At our Academic Competition, students have just 60 seconds to answer a question after it is read to completion. Many times, readers are cut off with a buzzer and a student's confident answer. It is a sight to see the quick thinking!
Deaf/HOH Class visits Mack Trucks
Students from Orefield Middle School's deaf and hard of hearing program visited Mack Trucks in Emmaus. Here, they were given a tour of the facility by a deaf engineer, able to talk with HR, see the manufacturing process, and learn about the company. Many of the students took great interest in the company and called it an eye-opening and refreshing experience.
EPLC'S Visit to CLIU
The Education Policy and Leadership Center came to share some information about school budgets with local administrators. A panel at the information session included Ron Cowell (EPLC), Dr. Randy Ziegenfuss (Salisbury SD), Jay Himes (PASBO), Sean Crampsie (PSBA), and our own Dr. Elaine Eib.
CLIU Board President visits CCEA
Our board president, Mr. Robert Bold, took time to visit Carbon County Enhanced Autism center. On this visit, Mr. Bold, Director Dr. Eib, and Assistant to the Director Kim Talipan, were able to take a peek into an autistic classroom.
Special Soles 5k delivers good time to families
Special Soles 5k was without snowflakes this year! We had sunshine and fair weather for the walk/run event which included a kids fun run, food, music, and raffles. This event benefits Carbon Lehigh Special Needs Children's Foundation.
Student Forum Wacky Olympics benefits Angel 34
As Student Forum's culminating project this year, Wacky Olympics was held with participating school districts and the additional teams they brought. This event served as a way to cap off students' fundraising efforts for Angel 34. Hundreds of kids gathered at LCCC's gymnasium to compete in a series of silly mini-games that resulted in winning teams receiving trophies for their feat. At the end of the day, Doug Sheriff, CEO of Angel 34, announced that Student Forum efforts raised nearly $9,000 to aid in the battle against pediatric cancer.
K'Nex Challenge flexes a muscle in STEM world
These students are using their STEM knowledge to build a K'Nex design that meets both a design challenge and judging criteria. The criteria this year was to build an environmentally friendly, moving attraction like you'd see at a theme park or fair. The older group of students competing had to also include a budget in their presentation. Student designs twirled and whirled when activated, impressing passersby!
Board members visit Western Salisbury classroom
Cliff Castoral's classroom received lots of visitors from the CLIU board and administration on this day! Several members of the CLIU board enjoyed seeing the daily happenings in Mr. Castoral's room; including morning meeting, breakfast, and check-ins with medical staff. One board member recounted how she stayed late into the afternoon, and how much she enjoyed seeing the kids in such a dynamic and inclusive environment.
Work Based Learning flips as teachers serve students at picnic
This is one time the work-based learning students get to kick up their feet and get served, instead of doing the serving! Students in the work based learning program learn many skills to expose them to independence and working. Their picnic this year had pizza, hot dogs, and other food served by teachers and aides. There was also music, games, and face painting for them to enjoy!
Keystone Technology Innovator Day brings area educational tech leaders together
Keystone Technology Innovator's day brought two local keynote speakers, Ross Cooper and Erin Murphy, co-authors of "Hacking PBL", to kick off a day of networking and learning. Breakout sessions after the keynote opening included tech tools and methods for classroom integration. Other topics included Google sites, digital centers, screencasting, Nearpod, flipping the classroom and more.
Special Olympics draws huge crowd at Whitehall High School
Embracing kids from all ways of being, Special Olympics encourages special needs kids to throw their hat in the ring and compete! Kids loved taking their best shot at stations that included the softball throw, long jump and more. The students had support from teachers, aides, and family who cheered them on to completion. Volunteer students from local districts helped get each competitor to the right station and assisted with the organization of the event.

Judge the Hero Dog pays a visit
American Humane Hero Dog Awards winner Judge and Chief Lee Laubach (from Allentown Fire Department) visited our students at our enhanced autism centers! The kids learned about how Judge detects accelerant to indicate arson in vehicle, home and other types of fires. Judge was so patient with our students' petting, pokes and prods!
Student Forum volunteers for Angel 34
This year, Student Forum decided to team up with a community charity called Angel 34. The idea is to plan an event that can be used to raise funds for Angel 34 and contribute to their mission of helping families and children afflicted with cancer.
Code Jam 2016
These students have a talent for using code to build websites and other applications on the internet. Teams from CLIU #21 districts and Colonial Intermediate Unit #20 districts competed for the prize in November. Congratulations to the winners, Emmaus High School!
Tech Wizards work on special projects using coding
Tech Wizards meet again! These students brushed up on their coding by building race tracks with Google CS First, but they're not always on the computer. This group has also built robot arms, parachutes and experimented with copper circuits.
Students 'wow' at staff holiday performance
This year's holiday performance included students from Carbon Learning Achievement School and Carbon County Enhanced Autism Center. They acted out their rendition of a Pennsylvania Dutch Christmas! Also, our work-based learning program turned out a staggering 115 cupcakes for the occasion!
Teachers get more familiar with LMS tool, Canvas
CLIU Canvas Day presenters gathered here with fellow teachers and administrators to talk about how they implement the online learning management system in their schools and classrooms. Online learning can streamline student/teacher interaction and integrate technology into learning by using other external tools like videos, graph builders or polls.
Holiday Board performance
Students from CCTI's life skills classes performed songs at this year's holiday board dinner. Afterward, they handed out holiday cards to the audience. Also, work-based learning students made beautiful desserts! The kids worked hard to make the night perfect!
Teacher of the Month also wins CLIU Facebook Contest
CONGRATULATIONS to a wonderful teacher in our organization, Ms. Adriane Strohl! Mike and Steph from the B104 morning show (Mike & Steph in the Morning) presented Ms. Strohl with her teacher of the month award! Mike and Steph brought pizza and good conversation as students asked about their job on the radio and talked about their upcoming holiday break. It was a great afternoon for a deserving teacher!
LB Morris Visits Maple Shade
Classes from LB Morris performed a holiday show at MapleShade Senior Living Home today. There was a live nativity, Christmas carols and even Santa stopped by for a visit! The assisted living home tenants appreciate the kids coming by to sing for them.
CLIU student helps collect donations for Change for Change
One of Mrs. Parnell's students, Robby, from Orefield Middle School helped to collect and deliver homeroom donations for the Change for Change campaign. Way to go Robby! These proceeds will go to benefit local charities through Change for Change.
Legislators visit Kernsville Elementary
Legislators including Mario Scavello, Bill Royer for Ryan Mackenzie, Zachary Mako, Michael Schlossberg, Peter Schweyer and Michael Dee for Daniel McNeill visited Kernsville Elementary classrooms. Legislators had the opportunity to spend time with students and greet staff. It was a wonderful morning, especially because the kids loved having visitors!
Heffley, Hurley visit LB Morris Elementary
Representative Doyle Heffley and Brad Hurley, Constituent Services Representative from Senator Yudichak's office visited two classrooms at LB Morris Elementary School. We thank them for taking time out of their schedules to visit our students and their teachers!
Judge returns to Salisbury High School
Judge the Hero Dog and Chief Laubach from Allentown Fire Department paid another visit to one of our classrooms. This time, Ms. Seng and Ms. Evener's classes at Salisbury High School. Students were able to pet and interact with Judge and ask Chief Laubach questions about working with Judge!
New teachers experience Breakout EDU
Breakout EDU is an educational spin on the escape room game trend. Breakout EDU can incorporate any subject area or grade level. It is a game based on a fictional premise and the goal is to get the box open to obtain some kind of goal or prize. Educators from all over the country are now coming up with their own Breakout games to mix it up in the classroom. Here are teachers from Induction classes with their mentors working on a game of Breakout EDU!
LLAS celebrates win with Sundae Party
Lehigh Learning and Achievement School learned that working hard means you also get to play hard! Through their dedicated teamwork, Ms. Strohl's class built an exceptional doorway during Christmas time. A contest was run on Facebook where users voted for their favorite door, and Ms. Strohl's class won with 76 votes! They chose to celebrate with ice cream sundaes. Yum!

Muhlenberg Student Teachers come to CLIU
Aspiring teachers entering student teaching came to the CLIU to learn about what to expect in the classroom, methods of teaching, lesson planning and other tips that can be useful in the field. This group was excited to learn about what's to come!
New faces at Work-Based Learning
New year, new work- based learning students! These students are selected for the program by showing a high level of responsibility and skill. We are pleased to have a new set of faces at work based learning this year to serve up tasty lunches!
Joint Council explores at DaVinci Center
Our Joint Council consists of district leaders from Carbon and Lehigh counties. For the month of September, Joint Council met at the DaVinci Center in Allentown, where they were able to explore and see the benefits of taking student groups to the center.
Fall fun at Grim's
Students picked apples and pumpkins at Grim's Orchard on this sunny fall day! Center-based learning like this encourages multi-sensory learning through stimuli such as Grim's corn shed, slide, water pump racers and play yard.
Tech Wizards make robot arms
At Tech Wizards latest meeting, groups were tasked with creating robot arms using basic office supplies such as paper clips, masking tape, scissors and more. The arm had to function properly, and was tested through attempts to pick up a plastic cup. In doing this, students had to challenge themselves by using engineering and reasoning skills.
Apple picking at Strawberry Acres
This small class made the most of their time at Strawberry Acres! Students were able to feed goats and pigs, swing on the play set, participate in a hayride, and of course, pick apples and pumpkins! The kids also met Johnny Appleseed, and learned about the evolution of apples through the seasons.
