Updates and Information from the Guidance Department
Scheduling Timeline for 2017-18 School Year
The time has come once again to begin the scheduling process for next school year and we are excited to be using the same online enrollment process that we used last year. The first step in this process will be the viewing of a scheduling video produced by the guidance department that will be shown to all grade 9-11 students on January 19th and 20th. After students have watched the video they will be given scheduling worksheets to help guide them through the open online enrollment process. Open online enrollment will take place from January 23rd - January 30th for grades 9-11. Beginning in February, guidance counselors will then meet with students grades 9-11 to review their schedule choices, answer questions, and make any necessary changes.
We encourage all students and parents to take a look through the 2017-18 Program of Studies by following this link to the guidance department webpage: http://www.brownsburg.k12.in.us/bhs-guidance-home. Once there click on the photo on the left hand side of the page to view the Program of Studies.
Area 31 Opportunities
I wanted to make you aware of two opportunities for you and your student(s) to explore our Area 31 career center programs before we begin the scheduling process for the 2017-2018 school year.
Students will be able to attend a meeting at BHS during the morning of January 20th. We will have representatives here from Area 31 to speak about their programs and answer any questions students have about attending. If your student is interested, please have them stop by the team office to sign up or you may email Mrs. Frazer at rfrazer@brownsburg.k12.in.us
On January 28th, there will be an Open House at Area 31 career center (located on the Ben Davis High School Campus) from 6:30-8:30 that is open to students and their families to attend. A chili dinner will be served and you may meet with representatives of all the programs available.
AP/Dual Credit Night
As we plunge into the second semester, we want to bring to your attention our upcoming AP/Dual Credit Night that will take place on Tuesday, January 17th from 7:15 – 8:00 p.m. in the BHS LGI Room. If your son/daughter is considering taking any AP or dual credit classes next year, we highly encourage attending the event. The night will NOT include a formal presentation but rather a fair-type style in which you will have the opportunity to gather information and materials from many AP and dual credit teachers as well as speak with them in person about any questions you may have. Please note that a Junior Parent Meeting is taking place in the auditorium prior to this event. This is a scheduling meeting for junior parents only and separate from the AP/Dual Credit Night event. We wanted to make you aware of this so you did not think you missed a presentation.
For a complete listing of the Advanced Placement and dual credit classes offered at Brownsburg High School for the 2017-18 school year, please visit pages 9 & 10 of our Program of Studies found here on the home page of the BHS website: http://www.brownsburg.k12.in.us/our-schools/brownsburg-high-school .
Lastly, to gain insight on the expectations, benefits, and differences of AP and dual credit classes, please see attached for a brief self-explanatory 8-slide PowerPoint.
PSAT Scores
Your students will receive a copy of their PSAT score report in their English class today as long as your student indicated BHS as their testing school. This report will have valuable information as to what items your student missed and help them prepare to take the SAT their junior year. Students will have the opportunity to take the PSAT again in the fall of next year to potentially qualify for the National Merit Scholarship.
Semester 2 Academic Reminders
If your student is looking for opportunities to improve grades this semester, there are a few options. The best resource your student has is his/her teacher. Reach out to teachers early in the semester to find out times for academic assistance, exam review sessions, and opportunities for your student to get some additional help. You can also reach out to the team if your student is interested in finding a peer tutor for a specific subject. Finally, the media center hours are listed below. Your student can come in before or after school each day to have a quiet work space.
Media Center Hours Semester 2
Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday: 7:00 am to 3:45 pm
Wednesday and Friday: 7:00 am to 3:00 pm
AP Exam Registration
This year, students will register and pay for AP Exams online. Online Exam registration will begin on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at 6:00 AM and end on Friday, February 24, 2017 at 11:00 PM. In order to register, click on the following link www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/150335.
To complete registration, students must answer all of the required questions. Registration is not complete until students have printed the pdf of the confirmation page that is provided at the end of registration. We know that parents may desire to register their students for exams. We strongly recommend that parents and students are both present while registering to ensure that the correct exams are ordered.
Brownsburg High School is excited to offer families the convenience of paying exam fees online at the time of registration. Please be sure to have a credit card or debit card available before beginning registration. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Comer at bcomer@brownsburg.k12.in.us.
