Mrs. Campbell's Notes
Our first nine weeks of the school year is coming to an end this month. I would like to highlight some of our students' accomplishments in and outside of the classroom.
1. Congratulations to Virginia Alaniz from Mrs. Hampel's Baking & Pastries II class. She won 3rd place at the State Fair in the Soy Baking Competition with the item she baked in class.
2. Congratulations to all the Homecoming candidates and to the Homecoming King and Queen, Lane Boen and Emily Fairchild. You all are great representatives of our school.
3. Shout out to KHS STUCO members, president, Morgan Freund, and sponsors, Mrs. Clover and Mrs. Higgins for planning a great week of Homecoming festivities. Homecoming week requires much planning and extra time on top of the daily school schedule. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication!
4. Way to go to Jase Reese who has shown great leadership to two new 7th grade students. His willingness to show them around and make them feel welcome has not gone unnoticed.
5. 91% of our students have passing grades in all classes. Keep working hard! We will continue to dedicate our time towards our 100% goal.
6. Congratulations to our band students who were nominated for and participated in the All-Star Marching Band at the KState football game on September 23rd. They performed at halftime with the KState band in front of almost 52,000 people. Nice Job!
7. Shout out to FCCLA club members for raising $750 selling cookies at the football games for their service project. The money raised will be donated to St. Jude Hospital since September was Childhood Cancer Awareness month.
I look forward to highlighting more accomplishments in future newsletters. We have great students and staff willing to go the extra mile. September was a successful month!

Students will have the opportunity to attend the Career Expo on October 25th. The Essdack Career Expo is the largest college and career planning event in the state and showcases career opportunities from two-year and four-year college degrees, industry certifications, apprenticeships, military opportunities, and business partners. We are planning on taking all freshmen and sophomores to this event. Upper class students will have the opportunity to attend if they would like to. The Expo is a perfect place to start exploring post high school futures.
Freshmen will be taking the PreACT this month and Juniors will be taking the WorkKeys. The PreACT gives our freshmen students an early experience with ACT test items and offers them a wealth of information to help students get the start they need to be college ready. The ACT WorkKeys measures career-relevant skills for workplace success. The assessments measure fundamental skills required for success in the workplace, and helps measure work place skills that can affect job performance.

Is Your Teen Stressed Out?
Recent studies by Mindlab International at Sussex University show that reading for as little as six minutes a day can reduce the heart rate and stress levels by 60% or more. That's 300% better than going for a walk and 700% more than playing video games…even more so than listening to music! Additionally, 19% of readers say spending time with a book makes them feel less lonely. If your child expresses feelings of stress and tension, have them pick up a book and read–just six minutes a day makes a difference in reducing stress and increasing academic performance. We have an excellent librarian to help them find just the right book!
Library News
Good things are happening in our newly renovated library! Mrs. Hutton, our literacy aide/librarian, works hard to make our library welcoming and useful to our students–she brings in books our students want to read, and she is also starting a Book-to-Movie Club over lunch! If you have an avid reader who craves more reading or a reluctant reader who needs a spark to read more, our new book club is just what they need; plus, it may just help them to destress! Stop by to see our revived library when you come in for parent/teacher conferences!
