Big picture

Welcome Back Tigers!

I am so excited to begin the 2020-21 school year. While not how we thought this year would begin, I can assure you that our teachers and staff are eager to reconnect with our students and families.

It is true that this year will hold some challenges: however, I know our community is one that is built on perseverance, understanding, and the ability to adapt to situations that are rapidly changing. In the history of this school, we have been fortunate to be a part of a collaborative and supportive community. I anticipate that as we move forward with this school year we will continue to experience that same mutual support and understanding.

It is inevitable that school will look quite different this year. Some of our families will choose remote learning while others will be at West Cypress Hills in person. Regardless of your family’s choice, each and every child will continue to be a part of our Tiger Family. Our common goal is to provide a safe learning and working environment for our staff and students.

Each school year, we establish a campus-wide theme that sets the tone and focus for the upcoming school year. Our theme this year, "One Team. One Family," focuses on unity and partnership among all of our stakeholders, which include every staff member, student, family and community member.

Together we can continue to foster the core values that make West Cypress Hills a safe and successful learning environment. We are in this together and will continue to be #WCHEStrong.

With warmest regards,

Melanie Beninga

Your Principal at West Cypress Hills Elementary

District Assisting With Technology to Support Remote Learning

The Lake Travis Independent School District (LTISD) will lend Chromebooks and WiFi hotspots to students in grades K-12 who have limited or no access to a device at home and do not already have a device from our initial deployment this past spring.

Families who meet the above criteria may request a Chromebook and/or WiFi hotspot via Skyward by selecting the "Technology Request Form" in the student's profile. We ask that you complete one (1) form per child for whom a device is needed.

LTISD staff will deliver devices to the student's home address as indicated in the "Student Profile" in Skyward between August 10 - 14 and August 17 - 18.

Meeting Your Teacher

On August 14, our West Cypress teachers will send emails to our Tiger families introducing themselves and providing helpful information about class schedules, expectations, and our remote learning platform, Schoology. The August 14 email will also include an invitation to meet individually with the teacher on the 17th or 18th of August. These personal meetings of introduction should last approximately 15 minutes.

Your family's private, 15-minute meeting on the 17th or 18th offers you, your family, and the teacher an opportunity to become acquainted. It is also the time to share with the teacher important information regarding your child, such as, how your child learns best, the subjects in which your child feels most confident, and areas where your child may need more support.

Our Tigers are the Stars of this first teacher meeting! It is a meeting to be all about them. We realize that you will, also, want to know about our curriculum, and we are scheduling a separate date and time in the near future, to talk about curriculum-related topics.

We strive to build relationships, and this year is no exception.

Caution: Teacher Assignments Currently Shown in Skyward are For Teacher Training Purposes Only

Any class information available to parents in Skyward at this time is for teacher training purposes only. These mock-ups include drafts of student class placements that may or may not correctly reflect your true 2020-2021 teacher assignment.

All Classes on Campus Will be Self-Contained

In prior years, our upper grade students were in departmentalized classrooms so that they received instruction on core subjects by multiple teachers throughout their school day. Through an abundance of caution, however, for this school year, all of our Kindergarten through 5th Grade learners will be assigned to self-contained classrooms.

Thus, our Tigers will have one homeroom teacher in one classroom. Their homeroom teacher will be providing their English/Language Arts, Reading, Science, Social Studies, and Math instruction. Our teachers are collaborating and sharing knowledge and expertise to ensure that our Tigers receive the highest quality instruction.

Returning LTISD Student Packet Now Available in Skyward.

The packet contains important documents and information which need to be acknowledged, reviewed and/or updated for each child.

Yes, Students Withdrawn from LTISD May Re-enroll Later for In-Person Learning

A frequently asked question pertains to re-enrollment of LTISD students after they have been withdrawn.

Students can be re-enrolled for in-person learning after having been withdrawn as students of the LTISD. The re-enrollment process is the same as the enrollment process for any new LTISD student. The re-enrolled student will, initially, be scheduled for in-person learning at the school building.

Once the re-enrolled student is attending school in person, remote learning, if desired, may be selected when the district next extends an invitation to select a preferred learning option.

District Releases Return to School Protocols for In-Person Learning on Campus this Fall

Dear Lake Travis ISD Parents and Guardians,

As you may recall, we shared with you our Student Commitment Form for selecting the return to school option—remote learning at home or in-person learning on campus—that will best serve your child this fall. The Student Commitment Form is available in Skyward Family Access and was due by Thursday, August 6. However, you may revise your commitment form up to two weeks prior to the first day the district is able to offer in-person learning on campus. Out of an abundance of caution, we will begin the 2020-2021 school year on Wednesday, August 19 with remote learning at home for all students through at least September 7.

To assist you with planning for the in-person learning on campus option in the fall, we are sharing with you our Return to School Protocols for COVID-19 outlining our health and safety guidelines. We fully recognize that you have many questions. Earlier this month, we posted information on our website that detailed our two learning options for the 2020-2021 school year. This information also included a number of Frequently Asked Questions. If you have not yet reviewed the details of these options, please visit the section School Year 2020-2021: Learning. Transformed on the LTISD website.

The conditions surrounding the pandemic are continually evolving. Our plans will be evaluated and updated as needed to comply and adapt to any new orders, guidelines or mandates issued by governmental and/or health authorities. It will be our priority to keep you informed of those changes and updates throughout the coming school year. Thank you for your continued patience, understanding and flexibility.

Sincerely,

Marco Alvarado

Director of Communications, Media & Community Relations

2019-2020 Field Trip Refunds

In order to keep our Tigers sheltered safely at home, all of our spring field trips planned for March through May were canceled. Some of our first and fourth graders' families had already paid for their field trips and may, therefore, be concerned about the funds turned in to teachers before we realized that the field trips could not take place.

Please rest assured that we have deposited your payments, have recorded your payments, and have a record of the resulting credit balance of each family.

And, we have plans to ensure that you receive full credit for your payment(s.)

  • For students returning to West Cypress Hills Elementary School for the 2020-2021 school year, the credit balance due your family for West Cypress Hills' canceled field trips will be applied toward the purchase price of West Cypress Hills classroom t-shirts and/or field trips that take place during the 2020-2021 school year.
  • For students who are not attending West Cypress Hills Elementary School during the 2020-2021 school year, a refund check will be issued to your family by West Cypress Hills Elementary School by the end of the school year. Please complete the WCHE Field Trip Refund Request Form to request your reimbursement check.
