BLOOD DRIVE THIS SATURDAY TO SUPPORT HALLE!
The community is invited to give blood in honor of Halle Guilliam at a special American Red Cross blood drive held in her name Saturday, November 11, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fall Creek Elementary School in Fishers.
10-year-old Halle is a happy and positive fourth-grader. She was diagnosed in June 2016 with medulloblastoma, a brain tumor. Since then she has undergone more than 30 radiation treatments and received multiple blood transfusions at Riley Hospital, always smiling through it all. The Red Cross provides the majority of blood used to treat patients at Riley Hospital and the IU Health System.
“As Halle received transfusions, it was meaningful to us to see the Red Cross logo on the bag and know generous Red Cross donors helped to save her life,” said Kara Guilliam, Halle’s mother. “During her battle, we have had lots of support from many. We are firm believers that no one fights alone. We are thankful for the support we have received so far, and we hope that the community will join us in giving blood in honor of Halle and other kids fighting cancers and tumors.”
“Halle is a fighter,” said Jason Guilliam,” Halle’s father. “From the day she learned about her diagnoses she has fought with a smile every single day.”
“There are so many reasons why someone may need blood that we don’t even realize,” said Meg Ahlering, business development manager for the Red Cross. “We take for granted that blood will be there at the hospital when we need it, but it can only come from generous volunteer donors. Giving blood in Halle’s name is a wonderful way to honor her and potentially help others with her condition.”
Every two seconds in the United States blood is needed to respond to patient emergencies, including accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease. The Red Cross must collect nearly 14,000 blood and platelet donations every day for the patients at about 2,600 hospitals nationwide.
