Happy 2015!!
It has been a while since we’ve all been together in our 2T community. As we readjust to the school day, we will review our routines and procedures in Room 5. We will begin the new year with clean desks (and chair buddies), organized book boxes and new seats! We will set new learning and personal goals for 2015.
Literacy: Unit Review, Assessment and Culminating Activities
Reading
This week, we will take the Unit 2 assessment for Journeys. It will be a chance to review and practice the skills and strategies learned in our reading program. I will use the assessment to plan my instruction in the weeks to come. We will revisit the stories of Unit 2 about nature and chose our favorite story of the unit. The students will practice reading a selected Journeys story and have the opportunity to read it to a small group of Edison PreK students on Friday!
We will also read New Year's inspired books and learn about New Year's resolutions and how people from all around the globe celebrate the New Year. Students will discuss their own family traditions for New Years's and write their own resolutions as a culminating activity.
Writing
Persuasive writing is our new writing unit. The second graders will first learn that persuasive writing attempts to make someone feel or think a certain way. Our unit will begin with practice on identifying the difference between a fact and opinion, followed by writing a few examples for practice. To get their feet wet, everyone will write a short persuasive paragraph about their favorite place to visit. When the students have a better understanding of persuasive writing, we will discuss the specific details a persuasive piece MUST have. First, they must write the name of the subject under discussion; for example; book, place, show or outfit. They should then use descriptive words to make the reader feel good about their topic. Finally, they will use choice words to make a powerful ending. We will spend time learning how to do each of these things. It promises to be a fun process.
