Create-Your-Own Pizza Slice Menu

The creativity of this group never ceases to amaze me. Students concocted a fresh idea for our class pick-your-own lunch menu, the create-your-own pizza slice, which was this Wednesday's lunch choice. Thanks to their creative marketing ideas including creating bookmarks, writing ads for the announcements, and greeting students at front doors (a special thanks to Ryan who dressed as a pizza slice to promote the lunch), our class's efforts resulted in a whopping 287 lunches being sold on Wednesday! I am proud of their efforts.

Our focus in math has been measurement and data. Students have been practicing conversions in customary and metric measurements. Next week we will be analyzing data on line plots and frequency tables, and practicing writing math explanations after reading data on graphs. In addition, we will be preparing for the performance based portion of the KS Math Assessments, which we will take on April 14.

We are currently working in literature circles. Students are participating in one of three novel studies in a literature circle format. They change roles for every assigned reading, and while I facilitate the group, students are responsible for keeping the discussion going, sharing their thoughts and opinions about the assigned reading, and asking questions/making comments as the book talk progresses. They have been doing an amazing job with this literature circle format!

Book projects are due April 30. Students were allowed to choose a book from any genre, and this month they will be creating a game board to play in class with their peers.

We are currently learning about Earth's systems - geosphere (land), atmosphere (air), biosphere (living things), and hydrosphere (water). We are applying this concept to natural disasters. Students are working in groups based on their interest and are researching how a natural disaster affects each of the earth's spheres. Our next topic will be about the solar system.

Testing , Testing

Students worked very hard last week during our ELA KS Assessments. We were very thankful to have the support of other students in the building, specifically Mrs. Grauer's AM Kindergarten who made pictures and a poster for us each day of assessments.

Just a reminder, Math Assessments will occur on April 14, 21, and 22. Thank you for reminding students about the importance of getting a good night's rest and breakfast on the morning of the test.

Slideshow Pictures Needed

Please remember to send in photos of your child from birth through today for use in the Fifth Grade Farewell slideshow. Lisa O'Donnell is coordinating the photos for our class and she is accepting hard or digital copies of photos. The deadline is April 17. Please send them in as soon as possible.

Supplies Running Low

Our classroom school supplies are in desperate need of being restocked. If you have any extra markers, Expo markers, tissue boxes. hand sanitizer, or disinfecting wipes, please send them in. Any donations would be greatly appreciated!
