Sparta was a powerful city-state in ancient Greece. Sparta was ruled by a small group of retired warriors. This type of government is called an oligarchy. The Spartans spoke Greek. They thought of themselves as Greeks. But Sparta was very different from the other Greek city-states.

Women in Sparta were treated better. Women's in Athens could not be citizens while the women in Sparta could be citizens, if they passed test. Women in Sparta were considered more important, they had more rights and liberty.
Spartan Government
Sparta was ruled by two kings. Sparta was originally founded in the interest of aristocrats and the two kings of Sparta always came from the two great aristocratic houses of Sparta. Although the kings could declare war, the kings held little rule over Sparta. The government of Sparta had a council of 28 elder nobles who made most of the political decisions of Sparta.
Spartan Economy
Unlike Athens, Sparta's economy depended on conquering other people and farming. Sparta's land was not enough to feed all of it's people. Because most of the Spartan men spent their lives as warriors, Sparta used slaves to produce it's goods. Sparta conquered other neighboring regions.
Spartan Education
Education was very different in Sparta than it was in the other Greek city-states. In Athens, Corinth, Argos, Megara and in hundreds of other Greek city-states, the purpose of education was to produce good citizens.
