The Tiger Times
Week of August 21 - August 25
Hello Tiger Family!
Friday we spent the day reframing our ideas about how we can respond more effectively to our students if they make poor choices and when they make good ones. As I've reflected on what I learned, I thought a lot about the things you said our first time together as a staff at the museum. How frustrating it is that our society has such strong muscle memory for "fast thinking" but how important "slow thinking" is when faced with really complex puzzles. Conscious Discipline is the perfect opportunity to practice this slow thinking. What have you clearly defined that you will do? What is the one thing you committed to try? How will you plan for success in trying this one thing? Sentence frames taped on the back of your badge? A sign on your wall? Incorporating a routine or song into your daily routine? Remember that our goal is not perfection but progress! Moving -even just a little bit- is a way we can shine the light on doing things we know will make a difference for our students!
Along the same line, keep in mind the 4th "R" we're focusing on this week -reading, writing, 'rithmetic and relationships! What do you have planned each day that will create the opportunity to build relationships with your students and between your students? It'll be exciting to see the connections we establish in these first few days of school. What will our students say about their teacher or their coach or their custodian or their associate principal at the end of the first week of school?
As we look toward the upcoming week, I think this: it might be hectic and it might be crazy and it might be frustrating. Then I remember three things:
1. No one can make me mad (or hectic or crazy or frustrated) without my permission.
2. Everyone has done their very best to be ready for Monday. That is a supposition we can all work from!
3. We got this! I have no doubt that we are going to rock this first day!
Proud to be your principal,
Shelley
