THE SKY NEEDS STARS
NUDGE: ROBERTS MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUME 33
Last weekend, my wife and I had a rare opportunity to go out to dinner without the kids. Which means we actually had a conversation without 30 interruptions. Often times, my wife wants to talk about her patients and the crazy happenings at the hospital. There are times the conversation is over my head, but I dare not act like I am not interested. In this particular conversation, she started talking about HIV and the impact it is having on cancer treatment. I had to take a time out and ask her more questions due to my sudden heighten level of curiosity. You see, growing up in the 80’s and 90’s HIV was a villain, destroyer, and doom for so many. Now we are actually having a conversation of HIV saving lives. A new era in the understanding of our DNA was kick-started by the completion of the human genome project in 2001. To keep it simple, the HIV virus is an incredibly effective penetrator of cells as we know. It gets right in there, and if it’s not diffused, it will kill you. Scientists have found a way to take out what is harmful about it but keep its unique ability to find and penetrate cells. The once deadly virus now can penetrate cancer cells with its new identity.
At this point you might be wondering what connection am I trying to make with education. Think about it, everything changed by decoding the genome. In the same way, every student that comes to us has a trail of clues that help us understand them better. Our job is to see the invisible potential that is hidden under the layers of labels placed on them. If we can truly take the time to map out our students data and create the right conditions/environment, we can find what inhibits and allows a growth mindset.
I am awestruck at the fact that a scientist was able to change the identity of HIV in the right conditions. If we can bend, alter, or change the identity of our students, we can allow our students to edit preconceived limitations. This is why we speak life into our students everyday. We are constantly refining their mindset to grasp that all behavior is belief-driven.
Finally, there had to be someone crazy enough to question all the possibilities of HIV despite the stigma. Learning how to ask good questions is a cornerstone of growth. Why don’t we ask enough questions? By asking good questions, it burns off everything irrelevant, which leaves you with purity of what is important. This school will question everything. We want to get to the purity of what is important, our "why''.
There is hope for every student that comes to Roberts to make progress and exponential growth. It starts with us willing to give them a new identity. Yesterdays villains can be tomorrows hope.
Thank you for radiating positivity,
Jorly
