December 2020

Dear OLHS Families,

Thank you for your continued patience and support during COVID-19. Many things are constantly changing, and we’re all learning how to live our daily lives differently. I appreciate you so much. As the world’s attention focuses on coronavirus, during the holiday season, turn your attention to those close to you. The faculty and staff of Ocean Lakes High School wish you peace, joy, and an amazing holiday. May this wonderful time of giving and spending time with family convey to you the joy that lasts throughout any virus! Please let me know how OLHS can best support you during this time.

Keeping an Eye on the Metrics

As of December 7, we report 10.1% positivity and 477 cases/week, which place us in the red/red. Therefore, we are announcing to families and staff that the SLCs are closing, select SWD receiving in-person learning will revert to virtual-only, and winter varsity athletic tryouts are postponed. Also, given the current trend regarding these health metrics, we have decided to reschedule the high school SOL writing test. Please understand that we cannot reopen schools while the health metrics are red/red. Our numbers will not change for the better if we do not work together to stem the community spread of COVID-19. I encourage you to please wear face coverings, wash your hands often, and please keep your distance from others whenever possible. Thank you for your continued patience and vigilance during this pandemic.

New Webpage for COVID-19 Information

VBCPS asks that you look at our new COVID webpage, featuring streamlined access to the dashboard, FAQs, health metrics, the Thursday updates VBCPS sends each week to families, and additional resources. As the school year progresses and we continue to learn about this virus and its impact on our schools, new information will be posted here. Also, the Fall 2020 reopening plan is still available on the page for reference.

Food Service Information

As a reminder, bagged meals are provided Monday-Friday, 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., with the Friday bag containing breakfast and lunch for Saturday and Sunday. Meals may be picked up from any school, regardless of where your child is enrolled. Additionally, VBCPS will offer weekday meal delivery in multiple neighborhoods beginning Monday, Dec. 7. Below is a link to the meal delivery locations and delivery times. Buses will arrive at these stops and remain for 20 minutes before moving to their next stop. Parents and/or students can pick up meals at these stops for all children 18 and under in their household.

Planning for Term 2

As the end of the first term nears, and the second term is on the horizon, VBCPS recommends that families stay with the learning option they chose initially for instruction (Option 1/in-person or Option 2/virtual). However, we recognize circumstances change and that you may need to change your child’s learning environment. Any parent who believes that a change in option would be beneficial for their child should notify the principal in writing (email is fine) before Friday, Dec. 18. This will allow the school staff to review requests against seat availability in both Option 1 and Option 2 as schools finalize schedules for the second term, which begins Feb. 2. If you do not contact the principal by Friday, Dec. 18, your child will begin the second term with the option they are currently registered. While we will do our best to accommodate requests, not all shifts between options may be possible depending on space and staffing. Families/Students will be notified on or before Jan. 27 of their learning environment placement for the second term.

Password Reset and Recovery for Secondary Students in ClassLink

A reminder for secondary students: PLEASE set up password recovery and reset in ClassLink. This simple process is completed right in the ClassLink launchpad and needs to be done as soon as possible. Once set up, students should change their passwords immediately to keep them secure. Instructions can be found HERE.

Parking Pass Refund

You may have seen a social media posting indicating all student parking fees will be refunded. It was recently decided that any student who paid for a parking decal would receive a full refund. Our bookkeeper will complete the refunds on or before Friday, December 18th. The checks will be mailed to students' homes, so they are received before the holiday break.

Advanced Technology Center Virtual Open House

All middle and high school families are invited to the first ATC Imagine Con 2020, Wednesday, Dec. 16, at 5:30 p.m. Explore all the ATC has to offer from the comfort of your home during this virtual event.

NHS Tutoring

OLHS National Honor Society will open its virtual tutoring center on Dec. 8. The tutors would like students to join a Schoology group if they are interested - that way, they can advertise the Zoom link through that page and use the update wall for tips and sharing resources. The Schoology code is KNJJC-WK6VG.
