Bear Bulletin
May 10, 2020
From Mrs. Spencer:
Happy Mothers' Day, Bears! Thank you for all you do for your families, each other and our community!
Hope this finds you well. Thank you for everyone's efforts to make the teachers feel special. I heard from several teachers who received notes from students and parents about how much the sentiments and words meant to them. Keep them coming, Bears! We are in the home stretch!
Thank you to everyone who has given constructive feedback to me or teachers throughout this process. Every week, our leadership teams and faculty have come together to reflect on this feedback and determine courses of action we would take as a school to respond to the needs of our community. While we remain imperfect, I hope that you have seen greater alignment across the content areas in terms of our use of ItsLearning tools- the plans, calendar and the use of a weekly task list by course or assignments labeled by day as the weeks went on in this crisis. This has been an enormous learning experience for all and we are working through how we might further standardize our practices and prepare to "onboard" new students, staff and families next year and provide support to families, staff and students next year with these tools. Many thanks to our staff who remained reflective, open and responsive. This was no easy feat and I appreciate their efforts to reach the varied needs of many.
A few updates:
1. Progress Reports: Progress reports are now viewable in Skyward Family Access. Please view them and talk with your child to make sure he or she is not missing any assignments. If they are, encourage your child to review their ItsLearning courses or message their teacher to learn what is missing so they can complete them. We have heard of an instance where a child was submitting blank assignments that would up appearing "completed" on Itslearning, but the child had not completed them. Middle school is a time for young people to make mistakes, determine where their priorities are and sometimes mistakes will be made. I don't believe many students did this, but I would suggest checking in with your child on the quality of their work prior to submission. Please remember that the final report cards will not reflect numeric grades for the last nine weeks or the semester, so please do not worry if your child's grades are different this nine weeks than is typical. We have heard that some students are thriving in this learning environment and other students feel disconnected. The world is in such a difficult moment of late, changes in grades can be expected. If your child has been doing well all year, but dipped recently, they will be find for meeting standard.
2. The Last 2 Weeks Of School: The last two weeks of school will be focused on capturing missing assignments from students and bolstering student understanding on critical standards. Teachers may issue assignments to continue learning on previous standards or choice menu boards, but no new content will be presented. Students who need additional help with previously presented content will receive support from their teachers and need to check in with them through messaging them or attending Zoom lessons/office hours. Students may also continue the use of adaptive software (IXL or Kuta in Algebra) and reading novels of their chosen genre, as well.
3. End of Year Events: There are few key end of year events that nary a pandemic will stop us from hosting. We have had to change the format of our celebrations, but celebrate we will:
- 6th-8th Grade Awards Night: Annually, we present awards to students for academic, attendance and good character reasons. Instead of meeting virtually, we are creating a presentation similar to our Honors Assemblies where the presentation is conducted via a recording with names read and a link sent out families. We will send one out for this event during the last 10 days of school so families can celebrate in their own way, on their own home, in consideration of their own contexts. Please remember, awards will be determined ONLY based on the first three nine weeks of this school year. The fourth nine weeks is not being considered.
- 8th Grade Farewell Ceremony: Much like the Awards night, our farewell ceremony will be recorded, with names read, and a link sent out the last week of school. My recommendation to you is to do something fun as you listen- dress up, enjoy a celebration at home with your family, whenever and however that speaks to you as a family, but please celebrate this milestone.
- 8th Grade Drive Through Clap-Out: On May 28th at 10:00 a.m., 8th grade families are invited to decorate their cars and meet up at the MHS Fieldhouse parking lot to line up and do a drive through of the perimeter of SBMS. A route and directions will be sent out next week, but teachers and staff from 8th grade (and possibly others) will be there to wave and celebrate our 8th Graders.
- 8th Grade Panoramic Photo and Graduation Program: Our PTA and Mrs. Avalos, 8th Grade Assistant Principal, are working on preparing a panoramic photo and graduation program for each of our 8th grade families to be distributed later in May or early June. This is taking a bit of technological wizardry since we weren't able to conduct the panoramic picture, but this is something they are hoping to create. More to come.
4. Closing Out the School Year and Student Materials Return/Pick-Up: By the end of the week next week, you will be receiving information from SBMS on dates and times the week of May 18th-22nd your child may come to SBMS to drop off library books, technology and textbooks. Additionally, students will be granted access to the building to clean out athletic lockers and regular lockers, for the few students who requested them. All social distancing guidelines will be honored and most of the drop off of materials will be done outside. Until you receive those directions, please ask your child to check their belongings for any textbooks, library books, class novels and other items from SBMS that they need to return. Stay tuned for directions from us on when this is available to your child.
Please review articles to follow with more information on the closing of the school year. If you need anything, please let me know.

One School, One Book and Summer Reading!
SBMS Summer Reading List:
Mrs. Silva and our Language Arts Team has been working on developing a summer reading list in consideration of the genres students will read next school year. Their goal was to create a list of 20 diverse, engaging titles that also tied in with some of the themes that the ELA teachers discuss during the school year. Four themes emerged from their discussions and are presented in our SBMS Summer Reading List: Sweet Summer Fun, Survival Stories, Identity and Self Discovery and Grief and Loss.
Mrs. Silva created an amazing interactive infographic with clickable links. If you hover over the book cover, you get a brief description and more information at Good Reads. Some titles are for older students, so I’ve marked those with a 7 or 8 where appropriate.
Spring Branch Middle School Summer Reading List for 2020
Our recommendation is that your child reads one of each of the genres, if possible. Next school year, the language arts teachers will present additional texts from each of those genres and ask students to make text to text connections between the books read and those presented at that time. Many thanks to our awesome librarian, Mrs. Silva, and our language arts team for their efforts on this!
One School, One Book: SBMS Reads ReStart by Gordon Korman
Join us in a One School, One Book reading activity this summer by picking up a copy of ReStart by Gordon Korman. This book is a wonderful book of reflection and renewal of the main character, a middle school boy who suffers an accident and resulting amnesia! As a result of this accident, he is able to make some decisions about who he wants to be in this coming of age story. More to come on this, but this program will offer students a chance to engage with Ms. Silva and others this summer around the book and a celebration of reading will occur next semester with all students who read it. Blue Willow, a wonderful independent bookstore in SBISD, offers the book for all to enjoy. The book is around $7. If your family needs assistance in attaining the book, please let Mrs. Spencer know by emailing her at stefanie.spencer@springbranchisd.com. More to come on this special event!
