The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy
A Signature Program of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
The Transformation of Me
The Delta Academy program of Queens Alumnae chapter is a collaborative effort with the Institute for Health Professions in Cambria Heights. Many girls today are ignored or left behind at the very point in their lives when they are most in need of attention, support, and encouragement. Delta Academy seeks to remedy some of these deficiencies and offers supervised and structured experiences that will help girls grow to be productive citizens with high self- esteem and an appreciation for the demand of an increasingly technological society. We do this utilizing a comprehensive curriculum centered around 3 principles - Knowing Me, Developing Me and Preparing Me.
Our overarching goal is to guide girls into womanhood with educational support and professional guidance that will teach them how to create opportunities for academic success, to develop their abilities and talents and to become change agents in the transformation of their communities.
Sessions Monthly on the 1st & 3rd Saturday
Delta Academy meets monthly on the 1st & 3rd Saturday from October – May.
How Delta Academy works: As they explore knowing me, Delta Academy participants will explore topics in self-esteem and decision making relationships. During developing me, young women will have the opportunity to examine and discuss topics related to body image, sexual health, nutrition and fitness. Lastly, preparing me focuses on leadership development skill building, community action and advocacy and introduces the young women to stem and non-traditional career exploration.
Program highlights: Delta Academy is open to all girls ages 11-14 residing in or attending junior high school in Queens, New York. In addition to monthly program sessions there will be field trips and cultural activities throughout the year.
