Tallmadge Amendment
February, 1819
James Tallmadge proposes a bill
Tallmadge proposed a bill that would admit Missouri as a free state by forbidding further introduction of slavery and declaring all children born of slave parents after the admission of the state shall be free upon reaching the age of 25.
Denied
The bill provoked a heated debate about slavery in congress and nationwide. The slave section was convinced of the necessity of maintaining equal representation in the Senate. The House adopted the amendment but the Senate rejected it. An argument about the expansion is beginning to develop and create a larger division between the north and south, we need to take precautions!
