What is Honors Language Arts?
Honors Language Arts is a class at Westside Middle School designed for students who are passionate about reading and writing. It is more rigorous than grade level language arts. Students are asked to read more challenging texts, work more frequently outside of class, and should be able to work independently.
Students who are successful in Honors Language Arts
- thoroughly enjoy reading and writing
- appreciate discussion about what they are reading
- have strong time-management skills, for both short- and long-term projects
- are capable of working without step-by-step guidance
- are willing to work through situations that are uncomfortable
- use self-advocacy and problem solving skills when confused or frustrated
- are dependable and trustworthy
- consistently complete quality work and take pride in the finished product
- complete work on time without reminders
- are capable and enjoy reading texts that are above grade level.
Frequently Asked Questions
Students do not need to be in EY to participate in Honors Language Arts. Students should be eager to learn, willing to work hard, and capable of reading texts above grade level. Classroom teacher recommendations will also be considered as a part of the application process.
If I don't take Honors Language Arts now, can I still take Honors Language Arts in 8th grade? High School?
Yes. Students do not need to take Honors Language Arts 7 as a prerequisite to other honors courses; however, students who do take honors language arts in grade 7 will have more exposure to honors level work.
If I take Honors Language Arts now, do I have to take it again next year?
No. Students can make changes to course selection for each academic year when registering.
Can I switch to regular language arts right away if I am not successful in honors?
No. Honors Language Arts is a full year commitment. Due to staffing and scheduling restraints, schedule changes would not be considered until the next year.
How much work is there outside of class?
Students should expect an average of 30 minutes of homework daily for honors language arts.

After you submit your application, a panel will review it, and your current classroom teacher will be asked for their recommendation.
As a part of your application, you will need to submit a piece of work on the Google Classroom site that you are proud of and that demonstrates your ability to be successful in an honors class.
7th grade applications are due April 8.
8th grade applications are due March 18.
