Allie Franklin Named Top Volunteer

Congratulations to Allie Franklin! She has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence from The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards and has been designated one of the top student volunteers in Alabama! Thank you, Allie, for making a difference!

Sydney Helton Places in Three Weight Classes

Congratulations to Sydney "Honey Badger" Helton for placing in three different weight classes this past weekend at the "All Girls International Pastor Aid Invitational" (wrestling competition) in Alabaster! She took gold in her weight class of 122 pounds as well as silvers in the 134 and 140-pound weight classes.

Scholar's Bowl Update

Varsity Scholar's Bowl is 7-2 in County Competition after four weeks. Blake Christiansen leads all county players in the number of questions answered. Congratulations to the team for continuing to have a great record and to Blake for his success!

State Basketball Tournament Updates

  • Tickets for the AHSAA State Basketball Tournament in Birmingham are $11 at the gate. Students should also plan to bring money for concessions if needed; food will not be provided.
  • Pep buses will be getting back after the 3:30 p.m. buses, so students who ride the pep buses will need to make other arrangements to get home Wednesday afternoon.

Today's Home Openers

Our baseball and softball teams will play in their home openers today! The 9th grade baseball team takes on Bob Jones at 4:30, followed by varsity at 6:30. The varsity softball team takes on Austin at 4:30, followed by JV at 6:00. Let's go, Trojans!!

Calhoun Lowers GPA Requirement for Foundation Scholarships

Calhoun Community College has just lowered the minimum GPA requirement to a 2.5 for foundation scholarships. The deadline to apply is March 1st. Please apply online at https://calhoun.academicworks.com/users/sign_in.

State Basketball Tournament Information

The Lady Trojans will take on Blount in the State Semi-Finals next Wednesday, February 27, at 12:00 at the BJCC in Birmingham. It will be a WHITE OUT, Trojan Nation! Students will have the opportunity to attend the game and receive an excused absence if they follow the procedures listed below. We will also take pep buses to this game; students who would like to ride a pep bus will need to follow the procedures below. Let's support our Lady Trojans!!


  • Wednesday will be a full day excused absence for students who return an AHSAA ticket stub from the gate. NO printed online ticket will be accepted for an excused absence.
  • To be excused, car riders MUST return an AHSAA ticket stub, with name printed on it, to the specific box in the Attendance Office on Thursday, 2/28.
  • Students who would like to ride the free pep bus MUST turn in a parent permission note to Mrs. Weir, not teachers, no later than 8:30 AM on Tuesday, 2/26.
    • Cut-off for turning in pep bus notes will be 8:30 AM on Tuesday, 2/26.
  • Students riding the pep buses will report to the main gym at the 8:30 AM bell on Wednesday, 2/27.
  • Pep buses will depart at 8:30 AM or ASAP.
  • Any Tech student who rides the pep bus will report to the main gym at the 8:23 AM bell.

*Students who ride the pep bus to the game MUST ride the pep bus back to the school from the B.J.C.C. NO EXCEPTIONS. A student who does not do this will have consequences.

*Tickets for the game will be $11 at the gate. Students should also plan to bring money for concessions if needed; food will not be provided.

HGHS Flag Line: Any current 9th-11th grade girls interested in being in the 2019 HGHS Flag Line, that performs with the band at all varsity football games, need to sign the interest sheet in the front office and pick up a form listing important dates and information. You do not need any previous flag experience to join. Basics and tryout routines will be taught at clinics.


Prom Auditions: Auditions to perform at the HGHS Prom will be held on Monday, February 25, at 3:40 in Room C110. Candidates need to sign up with Mrs. Dean by Thursday, February 21.


Drama Club Picture: The Drama Club photo retake is Tuesday, February 26, at 8 a.m. in the Black Box.


Dyslexia Parent Night: S.P.A. training will be the focus of the next Dyslexia Parent Night on Tuesday, February 26, at the Madison County Board of Education. Click here for more information.


Medical Academy Internship Applications: Applications for Medical Academy internship are available now from Mrs. Thomson and Mrs. Frasier and are due February 27, 2019.


Cap & Gown Pictures: Cap and gown picture orders are due to Mrs. Sharp in the front office by Thursday, February 28.


Baseball T-Shirts: Here is an opportunity for Trojan fans to proudly support our reigning state baseball champs! The baseball team is selling T-shirts for $20. The shirts are Nike cotton (short sleeve), and sizes range from youth large to adult XXL. Color options are red, gray, and black. Students can see Coach Perez in C209 to purchase. Thank you for your support!


Sock Sale to Benefit National Pediatric Cancer Foundation: HOSA is selling socks for $5. One dollar from each sale will be donated to the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation. See Mrs. Thomson or a HOSA member to purchase.


Soccer Fundraiser: The soccer team is selling clear bags that are size and style approved for Huntsville City Schools' sporting events. The clear tote bags are 12"x6"x12" and have the HG logo on them. They are $15 each and can be purchased through MySchoolFees. Students can also purchase them by seeing Coach Lilavois, Coach Balash, or Coach Williams.

Senior Information

Senior Breakfast & Senior Awards Day: Seniors, mark your calendars! Senior Breakfast and Senior Awards Day are scheduled for May 15th. The breakfast will be at 8 a.m. followed by awards at 9 a.m.


Senior Parents: It is time to start planning this year's breakfast to celebrate our seniors. Senior Breakfast and Awards Day will begin at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, May 15. Our Senior Breakfast celebration is a time honored event at Hazel Green to honor our graduates. Please contact ebrady@mcssk12.org if you are interested in becoming our parent contact for this event or if you would like to donate your time or food for this occasion.


Attire for Senior Awards Day & Graduation in May: School appropriate dress for Graduation AND Senior Awards Day will be followed: ALL seniors will wear the graduation uniform-caps, gowns, cords, and stoles to BOTH Graduation on May 22 and Senior Awards Day on May 15. Girls will wear a school-appropriate, “dressy dress” or pants suit under their gowns. Dark or neutral colored shoes are recommended. Boys will wear dark slacks, a white, button-down, collared shirt, and a dark-colored tie, with dark or neutral colored shoes. Bow ties are allowed. NO flip flops, rubber “shower shoes,” tennis shoes, Van’s, Chaco’s or casual or wedding TOM’S are allowed. Boots are allowed as long as they are clean. Students not wearing appropriate clothing or footwear will be removed from the line-up until proper items are obtained. “When in doubt, DON’T.” Graduation caps should be free of any writing or designs, and they should be worn properly. DO NOT WRITE ON THE TOP OF THE GRADUATION HAT. The point of the hat should be midway of the forehead. Do not place hat on the back of the head. Tassels should hang on the right side. Only school-approved caps, gowns, cords, or stoles will be allowed. If you have a question or doubt about your attire, you need to ask Dr. E.Q. Headen, Mrs. Scroggins, or Mrs. Brady BEFORE awards morning or graduation. If you have a financial issue and need assistance with attaining the proper attire, you may ask ANY HGHS employee, and we will assist you with finding what you need.


Senior Follies Reminders:

  • We will hold another open rehearsal on February 28th.
  • ALL Follies videos and pictures for the senior slideshow are DUE to Mrs. Barnes by Friday, March 1st. Pictures should be in a digital format or email. No baby photos or professional photos accepted. All people featured in the photo must be 2019 graduates of HGHS. ALL videos must be edited and ready for production.
  • Follies FINAL cuts for routines and skits will be Thursday, March 7th, after school in the Black Box. All skits and routines must be showcased and ready to perform. If you can't be there, you must have someone stand in for you in your skit or routine.
  • Senior Follies MANDATORY tech rehearsals begin March 11-13 after school. All those participating in Follies must have a parent permission form signed and returned in order to perform. Please see Mrs. Brady for the form. Full dress rehearsal will be Wednesday, March 13th, after school. All Follies tech rehearsals are open to members of the senior class participating in the show only.
  • Seniors who would like to design a senior T-shirt for Follies or design the program for Follies, please turn in sketch designs to Mrs. Brady by February 28.
  • Senior Follies 2019 will be Thursday, March 14, in the Wright Gym at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7 at the door. All proceeds go to the 2019 Senior Class Fund to assist with graduation and senior activities. Everyone is invited to help us celebrate this graduating class!
  • Senior Follies morning performance will be held for the student body ONLY on Friday, March 15th, in the Wright Gym beginning at 9 a.m. Cost for student admission is $3.

Revision to Pre-Approved Absence Policy- Students requesting pre-approved, excused absences will need to turn the form in to Mrs. Sharp at least 20 days before the planned absence. Forms can be found on the school website.


Procedure for Riding the Bus with a Friend
- Any student who plans to ride home on a bus with a friend or to another address should follow the procedures below. No student will be allowed to ride to a different address without verification of parent/guardian approval by a school official.

1. A parent/guardian note should be turned in before first block to the receptionist desk at the back of school. The note should contain the address and information for the bus driver and should include the date and a correct phone number for verification purposes.

2. Pick up the verified note from the receptionist during lunch.

3. Give the note to the bus driver when entering the bus at the end of the school day.


Parenting Assistance Line:
PAL is a service where anyone can call a toll free number 1-866-962-3030 and receive useful, practical information and assistance with developmental and parenting questions and concerns. Available 8:00am – 8:00pm (central time) Monday – Friday.


Recycle:
Going green at “the Green”. The Hazel Green High School Special Education Department needs your old cell phones and ink cartridges. Items to be recycled can be given to a Special Education teacher or left for collection at the office. Your support of our recycling fundraiser is greatly appreciated.


Reward Cards:
Parents/Students/Employees, please remember to use your reward cards when you visit Publix and Hazel Green Pharmacy. Every time you have them swipe your card, HGHS will receive a portion of the sale. If you need a reward card, just stop by the main office to pick one up.

Driver’s permit:
Students /Parents, remember to pick up the Student Enrollment Form before you go to get your permit. The driver’s license department will not allow you to take the test unless you have this form and it cannot be faxed after you get there. These forms are good for 10 days only.
