Book Fair Profits
From this amount, we took a value of $1,304.43 from the book fair. This amount includes free books received by reading teachers and student gift certificates for reading, as well as books purchased for the library. The library purchased 134 books. Included in these books are small sets of several of the Truman Award winners for next year, which we expect to be popular. We've also purchased a variety of series additions, comics and books requested by students.
We have $475.45 remaining from our lump amount, as well as some possible bonus dollars. We will be purchasing items with these funds soon.

Places of the World
The world's oldest zoo stands on the grounds of the Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria. It was constructed as an imperial menagerie in 1752 by the Holy Roman Emperor Francis I, husband of Maria Theresia and father of Marie Antoinette. It originally consisted of 13 enclosures surrounding a pavilion intended as a breakfast area. It was opened to the public as a zoo in 1779.
Later, Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II organized exhibits to Africa and the Americas to add to the zoo. In 1828, he was given the first live giraffe for the zoo by an Egyptian official. Though it only lived 10 months, the giraffe started many trends in fashion, hairstyles and accessories.
Today, the zoo is a center for species conservation. It is one of only a few zoos with giant pandas. In 2007, it was the first zoo in Europe to birth a panda cub through insemination. It has subsequently bred other panda cubs.
The zoo was also the first to see an elephant born in captivity on July 14, 1906. It has continued a successful elephant breeding program, which includes an elephant born as a result of insemination with a wild elephant.
