Whew...We made it!

Dear GUMC Families,

Here at GUMC, one of our favorite songs is Going on a Bear Hunt by Greg and Steve. The lyrics of the of the song describe going on an adventure to find a bear, but there are numerous obstacles to face along the way. Going through a wheat field, crossing a bridge, climbing a tree, and rowing a boat across a river, all have to happen before coming to a dark cave... And, that's when things get really interesting, and even a little...bit...scary! I won't give it away to those of you who don't know the song, but you can check out the link below to enjoy it with your child.

As the 2020-21 school year comes to a close at the end of this month, I can't help but be reminded of that song. It has been a challenging year, with numerous obstacles to overcome - constantly changing rules, all-new guidance, and newly established procedures and policies to be followed. And that was all before we even stepped foot into the building!

Then, we had to confront the bear - opening the school and actually navigating the COVID pandemic!

I could not have made it through this year without each one of you, and WE could not have done it without one another. I want to thank you, our GUMC families, who first, trusted us enough to place your children in our care - and then, supported us by following all of those newly established rules, procedures and guidelines - so that we could safely remain open and in-person this year! Thank you for that trust and support, and for financially supporting our school during a time when enrollment was limited and expenses for PPE became a new "line item" in the budget!

I also want to thank our brave and daring, devoted and caring teachers who have helped to make this year such a success. Their commitment has been outstanding, and the children have been the beneficiaries of that dedication. Thank you for providing rich and engaging, hands-on experiences for your classes. Thank you for realizing that education is not just about academics, but that it is also about joy, wonder and fostering curiosity. Thank you for your willingness to teach "in-person" and for knowing that "in-person" is what it takes to develop the social skills children need to succeed. And, you did all of this while trying to stay appropriately distanced and masked, washing hands up to six times a day, and keeping everyone SAFE! Bravo teachers!

My deep gratitude also goes to Glenelg United Methodist Church and the Preschool Board and church trustees for their willingness to listen when I explained to them that I thought we could re-open the school safely. Without their endorsement, we wouldn't be thinking about end-year Classroom Celebrations right now. (Yes, FYI, there are some preschools that were not able to open due to the overwhelming concerns over COVID.) So, thank you GUMC, for taking a chance on making it work and for all of your support through the year!

Finally, I thank God for his provision and protection and for the gift of your children. Spending time with your amazing children everyday has been a blessing to me and the others on GUMC’s staff. It has helped us each to keep a little bit of normalcy in our lives. My congratulations to all of our families and children of GUMC Preschool on a wonderful school year, despite the challenges of the pandemic! I wish you all a very happy, safe and enjoyable summer. I look forward to seeing those of you who will be returning in September. To those of you who are leaving us for new places I wish you all the best and you will continue to be in my prayers. As for me, I am looking forward to preparing the way for the 2021-22 school year...

Hey Everybody! Let's go on a bear hunt! Are you afraid? ...I'm not afraid!

Blessings and be well my friends!

Updated 5/5/21 End-of-Year Class Celebrations

Children will be "graduating" and receiving certificates from their teachers. Due to COVID guidelines and restrictions, we will be unable to hold in-person celebrations with family in attendance. Teachers will take photos and/or videos to upload to class Facebook pages. We are very sorry, but this guidance was made clear during the MSDE ECE Listening Session on May 5th.

Summer Activities for Preschool to Keep ’em Learning

I know that many of you are looking forward to progressing toward "normal" this summer, especially after COVID left us all reeling and pretty much "locked down" in summer of 2020. But, just in case any of you are looking for some ways to continue to work with your child over the summer in preparation for returning to school in the fall, this online article by a teacher-turned-stay-at-home mom offers some great ideas and resources.
