Attention all 7th Graders and their Families
The 2021/2022 AVID 8 Elective is now accepting applications!
There are many advantages to joining the AVID Elective in junior high. You will learn skills and strategies that will prepare you for high school and college. Within your schedule, you will participate in collaborative study groups, receive the encouragement and support to enroll in rigorous classes, learn study and organizational skills, strengthen your writing skills, and make lasting friendships with your peers.
The AVID class, coupled with your hard work, will enable you to be more successful in junior high, high school, and beyond. The skills you learn in the AVID Elective will continue to help you build your record of accomplishment.
Unfortunately, the AVID Elective is not available to everyone. There is a selection process outlined below. This is a unique opportunity for you to apply to be part of the AVID elective class at Bednarcik for your 8th grade year.

5 Essentials Survey
Every year we ask parents, students, and faculty to complete a survey to help drive improvement at Bednarcik. The survey helps identify areas of strength and those in need of improvement. Please take 10 minutes to provide feedback for us. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
*Make sure to use Kendall for the county.
Did you know that February is American Heart Month?
It was declared so in 1964 by President Lyndon Johnson. American Heart Month, a federally designated event, is an ideal time to remind Americans to focus on their hearts and encourage them to get their families, friends and communities involved. Bednarcik's American Heart Association fundraiser is underway through our PE and Health classes. Students are learning about their heart health, why it's important to stay active and eat healthy, and much more! If you are interested in making donations, it will be done entirely online this year. Students can sign up, commit to a healthy heart challenge, and also send out communications for donations all via this link: http://www2.heart.org/goto/bednarcik308. If you have any questions, please email your child's PE or Health teacher for more information.

Breakfast/Lunch
Students will be able to take three days worth of food home each day they are here. There is no requirement for them to do so.
Building Readiness/Cleaning
Some additional measures that have been added to increase student safety include the following:
Signage is up around the building - both hanging from ceilings and taped on floors. Please review the traffic patterns and entrances with your Bednarcik students:
Please note entrances for In-Person learners.
ALL students who are brought to school by car will enter Door 2.
ALL students who are bussed to school will enter Door 11.
Drinking fountains have been turned off to avoid the spread of germs. Students are asked to bring their own filled water bottles from home to use while they are at school. Straws are encouraged to help keep masks on as much as possible.
Student restrooms will be regularly checked before school, during the time students are in the building and extensively cleaned each afternoon/evening. Bathrooms will be limited to one student at a time in our small bathrooms and 3 students in our larger bathrooms. Cleaning and sanitation will follow CDC guidelines, including frequent cleaning of high touch points. Thorough cleaning will occur each evening. Electrostatic sanitizing sprayers have been purchased to assist with sanitation. EPA approved disinfecting products will be used to disinfect hard surfaces throughout the day and during evening cleaning.
Health Needs
Masks are required for all students and staff while in the building. ***Please send an extra mask in a paper bag or baggie for your student to change into a fresh mask if needed, they may then put the used one in the bag to take back home. Mints can be a refreshing way to help students tolerate their masks if they are still working on adjusting to wearing masks.
Hand sanitizer - The district has supplied hand sanitizer and there are automatic dispensers scattered around the building as well as pump dispensers in each classroom. Students may not care for the smell. If your student would like to carry their own hand sanitizer, that is a personal choice you may make.
Daily Health Certification is required for ALL students EVERYDAY they are here in person. If your student’s Health Certification is not completed, it will delay their participation in class. As students arrive we will be checking their status, if the daily certification has not been completed online, they will be instructed where to go and they will not get to go to class until they have had a temperature check and the questions have been completed with staff. The health secretary will be running reports first thing in the morning and sending reminders, the final report will be at 7:45.
Medication and medication authorization forms: I have received some medication authorization forms, but am probably still missing most of them. If your student requires medication at school either on a regular basis or just as needed, please have your physician complete the NEW 2020-2021 Medication Authorization Form as well as Allergy Action Plans or Asthma Action Plans as appropriate for your student. ALL prescriptions or over the counter medication must have an Authorization form on file each school year. Here are the links for the forms you may need. Please note the Medication form is now 3 pages in length and the last page has the areas that require parent initials and signatures.
Eating breakfast will be more important than ever, since students will not be eating while they are at school. Hunger can cause stomach pain or headaches which are Covid-19 symptoms and we would love to be able to keep your students in school and not have to send them home for quarantine.
Instructions for the Daily Student Wellness Screening Certification
DAILY REQUIREMENT FOR EVERY STUDENT RETURNING TO IN-PERSON LEARNING
Student Health Certification surveys will be available for junior high parents to complete on January 25th and 26th. These surveys will be available in the parent portal to all parents of 6th grade students. Only students attending for each specific day will need to complete the form even though it will appear for all 6th grade students. Starting on 1/28 students in all three grades who are attending in person will need to complete the screening in the parent portal on the days they are attending in person.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the PTO?
Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is composed of parents, teachers, and staff working together to better our school and foster relationships throughout the school community.
What do we do?
We assist the school with providing innovative teaching resources for our kiddos. We plan fun events to bring families into the school throughout the year such as the 6th grade ice cream social and the 8th grade dance. We support our teachers and staff with appreciation events. We work with our school administrators to collaborate on school events and help to staff those events.
Who can join?
If you have a child at our school, you can.
Membership fees help to pay for all of the fun events and innovative teaching resources we assist the school with throughout the year. We also host fundraisers to help.
What if I am not able to help at the school, can I still join?
Absolutely. We ask for volunteers throughout the year but there is no minimum requirement to be a member. We’re glad to have your support in whatever form you are able.
Do I have to attend meetings to join?
No. We would love you to be there to help us plan and to provide feedback on the things we are doing, but it is not a requirement of membership.
