Winfield Elementary School Improvement Goals
All students will demonstrate measurable growth and achievement in reading.
All students will demonstrate measurable growth and achievement in mathematics.
From the Principal, Mrs. Alonzo
I hope you enjoyed the last two weeks’ suggestions on questioning during reading. As promised, here are some questions you can ask your child AFTER the reading of the story. Put them together with the BEFORE and DURING reading questions shared previously, and you can build a great conversation around another great story this weekend!
AFTER Reading: Predict, Infer, Question, Summarize, Determine Importance
Predict: If this story had a sequel, what do you think it would be about?
Infer: What is the main message of this book? What does the author want you to think about? What was the big idea?
Question: What questions would you like to ask the author right now?
Summarize: Tell me the story in your own words. Retell the most important events in the story from beginning, middle, and end.
Determine Importance: What were the most important event in this story? What will be most important for us to remember in what we read today?
Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent-teacher relationships are most effective when participants have frequent and open communication with each other and demonstrate mutual respect for each other’s role in a child’s life. When families are positively involved in their child’s education, the child will flourish. Winfield Teachers will conduct Parent-Teacher Conferences on Monday, October 30th and Tuesday, October 31st and additional select times through November 10th.
In order to accomplish meeting with all parents, these two days of school will be half-days with a 12:14 dismissal time. Please mark your calendars! We aim to conference with 100% of our families.
Important Reminder for Textbook Fees
The second installment is due by OCTOBER 20th.
You can pay online with a credit card by logging on to your RDS Parent Access Account. Payment by cash or check is accepted by visiting the school office. If paying by cash, please bring exact payment. Checks should be made payable to Winfield Elementary.
Please call Mrs. Griffith at 663-2287 with any questions.
Fire Prevention Education Saves Lives!
If you pulled up at dismissal Tuesday, you may have been alarmed to see Fire Truck in our lot. Not to worry— the Lakes of the Four Seasons fire department was here to share their fire safety message. Students enjoyed an informational presentation including a video, Q& A, reviewing 911 calls and Stop, Drop, Roll, and teachers demonstrating how to wear fire gear!
The LOFS Fire Auxiliary also sponsored a fire prevention coloring contest. The winners were: Jackson S. and Ella T. (kindergarten), Cameron C. and Josie T. (first grade), and Jillian C. and Ella T. (second grade). Congratulations to all the participants!
To reinforce fire safety at home, you can view the video shared with students: Fire Safety. Remember to check your smoke detectors regularly and to practice a Home Escape Plan in the event of a fire-related emergency.
Halloween Celebrations at School on October 31st
Please look for specific information from your child's teacher regarding their plans for a classroom Halloween celebration. Here are some important general guidelines for school:
COSTUMES
- Costumes are optional; however, most students elect to bring a costume.
- Students’ school costumes MUST NOT INCLUDE blood and guts, weapons, inappropriate messages, or skimpy/revealing attire.
- Weapons, even pretend weapons, are not allowed at school. Students will be required to change or modify their costume if they make inappropriate choices.
- All costumes should be age appropriate. All children in our school are between 5-8 years old.
- No scary movie characters (i.e. Chucky, Ghostface, Michael Meyers) are permitted.
PARTIES
- You must have a background check on file if volunteering.
- Only parents signed up for the party may attend due to space constraints.
- Volunteers will help children in/out of costumes if needed.
LOST and Found is overflowing!
From the Positive Behavior Coach, Mrs. Sims
Recognize ∙ Report ∙ Refuse
Now that our students know how to RECOGNIZE bullying, we must teach them how to REPORT it. Our students are told to seek out a caring adult and say in a strong respectful voice, “I need to report bullying.” Ask your child who they feel would be a good person to report bullying to. Our next lesson we will teach our children how to REFUSE bullying.
Don't forget to wear BLUE on Mondays in October!
From the Home-School Facilitator, Mrs. Mucha
Parent Teacher conferences are coming up soon. Please feel free to also schedule a time with me to go over any changes or needs for your child. Please send me an email at kmucha@cps.k12.in.us to schedule a time. Please let me know best time for both October 30th and October 31st. Since I am at two schools I would like to try and make a day for each but that will depend on parent needs. I am available until 4 pm each day.
