2 Words-On Purpose

Character, or who you are inside, is far more important than reputation, or what people say about you. But, as a leader, what people say about you can be important for gauging how well your character is coming through in your actions. You can’t control what people say about you, but you can serve and lead others well, so that the chances of good things being said will increase. That doesn’t mean you should only do good things to hear accolades, though. A major part of being a good leader is about acting selflessly for others. People talk about you when you aren’t around. That shouldn’t be a surprise because you also talk about other people when they aren’t around. It’s human nature. The question is: What do you want people to say when you aren’t there? Do you want them to say that you are reliable, there for your team, and a good influence? Or do you want them to say that you are only in it for yourself and the rest of the team are pawns in your plan to rise to the top? The things that are said about you will be determined by your intentional actions as a leader. If you want to be viewed as a good leader, you have to demonstrate good leadership. This isn’t something you can fake because the integrity of your intentions will always come through. If you want the narrative about your leadership to be that you are there for your teammates no matter what, you have to act in a way that supports that. That means helping a teammate who’s been struggling with endurance or shooting to improve during time outside of regular practice. That means promoting and supporting other players getting more court time than you if the game and their progress calls for it. Your actions and intentions will determine what people think and say about you and your leadership when you aren’t around. What kind of leader do you want to be?
