The Washington Monument

In 1848 a guy named L'Enfant designed the Washington Monument. It was 555 feet and 5 inches tall and made completely out of stone. It took about 36 years to build the Washington Monument.
It was built in Washington D.C. It was opened to the public on October 9, 1888. The people were astonished that it had about 91,000 tons of bricks.
The Washington Monument was the tallest man made building on Earth. It is about twice as tall as the Capitol building. It was closed in 2001 and reopened on February 22, 2002 on George Washington's 270th birthday.
