This Week's Theme: TRUST
Trust means having confidence in someone. When you trust someone, it means that you can rely on them. Leaders must exemplify three things to build trust in others: competence, connection and character.
Let's examine each one of these:
- Competence
Being competent is about having the knowledge, judgment or skill to do something successfully. Do you know what you are talking about? Can you make good judgements about it? Can you get things done in a timely manner? If the answer to these questions is "yes," then you are competent. - Connection
Making connections to others is important when you build trust. Be interested in those around you. Make an effort to get to know them and to allow them to get to know you! Build empathy by listening, observing, learning, and asking questions. Be curious! When people know you care and you listen to them, they feel more comfortable around you. - Character
Character refers to the morals and values that define you as a person. Having good character means that you are honest, consistent, courageous, loyal, and have integrity. If others know that you have good character, they are more likely to respect you.
Character is what makes trust possible. People can excuse leaders for slipping every once in a while in competence or connection, but a slip in character can impact a leader's credibility for a long time!
Build trust by focusing on these three attributes.
