Melanie
Assignments- Just a reminder that students can redo any work that comes home on Friday in their Friday Folders. Completed work must be turned in on Monday. I will then regrade and average the two scores.
Grades- Be sure to be checking powerschool for your students grades. if you do not now how to access please let me know. FYI - I am still in the process of entering grades from my paper grade book.
Math Help - Please be sure to check the following places for math help if needed. Here are a couple resources that can help with math homework! Both are outstanding.
https://www.youtube.com/user/dhabecker - videos of the problem set and some of the homework.
Oakdale Unified School District Web Page. Select Grade and then Lesson Module and Lesson Number. This is a video that will show how to complete a few problems on each of the homework pages. This page also has parent letters that are helpful. I will be having the kids put then in their binders!
FYI - both of these sites call Eureka Math -- Engage New York. They are the same program just with a different name!
Zearn.org - Zearn is another site that can be beneficial to your student. Zearn goes along with each lesson in Eureka math. There is a guided practice that helps to solidify the different skills. This would be especially beneficial if your child was absent from school! Each student in my room has a zearn account. Their log in is taped in their planner. 5th graders have used zearn more in class than the 4th graders.
BLOOMZ - if you haven't signed up yet! Please do! Log in information is directly below this box. I will be posting our planner daily on here.
4th Grade Families -
Thank you so much to those of you who have already contributed $5 to our Dusty Falls Pumpkin Patch fundraiser. We appreciate it! We could not make our booth a success for 4th grade without your support. Also, a huge thank you to Heather Rae for all of her support in preparing for the big night. It is a tremendous amount of work, and we thank her for volunteering to buy food in advance and plan the set up.
Also, we want to thank the amazing Pfaffinger family for their generous donation to our Hwy 49 Trip. Your contribution will make a difference in the cost for all. We appreciate you! Thank you!
Curriculum Update
READING
4th Grade
This week we are reading the story "Stormalong." Students will be working on understanding characters, as well as point of view. The story is a tall tale with a lot of exaggerations!
5th Grade
This week we are reading the story "Elisa's Diary." This is a realistic fiction. We will be working on theme (message of the story), dialogue, and sequencing events.
WRITING:
Both 4th & 5th Grades
We are starting a new writing piece. Kids will be writing a fictional narrative and taking it through the writing process.
MATH
4th Grade
This Friday the 4th graders will be taking the assessment for module 1. Review will come home on Thursday. Some students are still struggling with subtracting multi-digit numbers.
5th Grade
5th Grade is wrapping up module 1. Multiplying and dividing decimals has been challenging but they are working really hard! They also have a test on Friday! Review will happen on Thursday.
SCIENCE
4th Grade
This week we are learning about plant parts and their functions. We will compare different plant species and discuss their methods of survival.
5th Grade
We are focusing on learning about plant and animal cells. We have talked about how they are different and similar. This week we will be exploring cells with microscopes!
SOCIAL STUDIES:
4th Grade
We are continuing to study about California’s Geography this week. Students will be participating in activities that center on the natural renewable and nonrenewable resources that we have in California.
5th Grade
We are discussing native cultures to North America. We are comparing different cultures and where they live.
We are also learning our states and capitals. Kids brought home information about the Northeast Region. They made flash cards and also have blank maps of the Northeast. Please encourage them to study daily for this. Even 5 minutes a day will make a huge difference! The test will be on September 29th. Kids will need to label the states on the map and then write the capital. Spelling counts!
