Superintendent's Report
Dr. Grace introduced Career Development and Community Partnership Advisor Michelle Wallace. Ms. Wallace introduced two Shawnee High School Seniors, Titus Wright, and Natalie Selman. These Seniors spoke on the valuable experience they have gained through the SHS Internship program and their attendance at the Class of 2023 Senior Conference.
Titus Wright thoroughly enjoyed the conference and learned many life-based skills. He especially enjoyed the "Cooking for One" session. This session provided helpful tips and tricks on how to fill one's stomach without breaking the bank. Students learned about meal prepping/planning, budgeting, grocery shopping, how to transform leftovers, and more about the basic kitchen necessities; Michael Cappo taught it. Titus also shared more about the SHS internship program, particularly his internship. He is currently an intern at Impressions Dental and has the opportunity to shadow a dental assistant. Titus is one out of the eleven SHS students named as an Academic Scholar. He plans on going to dental school in the future.
Natalie Selman found Senior Conference to be eye-opening. A notable session, in her opinion, was titled "Dr.Who" and was taught by Keli Koons. This session answered questions like: "When to go?", "Where to go?", "How do I pay?" and "What medication should I have on hand?" Natalie also provided details about her internship. She is currently interning at Action Physical Therapy. Natalie states that this semester has been an excellent opportunity to hone in on what she wants to do and not do after high school. She hopes that next semester she will be able to explore the dental world.
Dr. Grace also introduced John Wiles, Director of Transportation. He told the board about a grant that Shawnee Public Schools recently received. This grant allows purchasing and implementation of four new electric buses and a charging station.
