STS becomes a certified X-STEM school!
St Timothy Catholic School is now a certified X-STEM school. The mission is to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Math activities within our school, encourage students to experience STEM and develop an interest in and knowledge of STEM careers.
By becoming a certified school, St Timothy is granted free access to the X-STEM Extreme STEM Symposium. The Symposium, part of the USA Science and Engineering Festival, provides interactive opportunities for students to explore STEM careers, and talk with leaders in STEM, including astronauts, oceanographers, engineers, paleontologists and storm chasers. Additionally, St Timothy School is invited to host an exhibit at the USA Science and Engineering Festival.

By participating in arts programs, students develop a wide range of skills, from creative and cognitive abilities to the personal skills necessary for academic success. St Timothy School arts programs offer a wide range of opportunities for students to excel in music, art, and theater.
Grades 3-5
3rd Grade
Third grade students are discovering the solar system, with special emphasis on the earth and sun. Students will conduct experiments that will illustrate how the length of a shadow changes depending on the sun's location in the sky. Third graders are also hard at work planning and practicing for the annual Patriotic Show.
4th Grade
Fourth grade students are using scales to show weight in US customary units as well as metric. Additionally, students studied the Continental Congress and the life of Patrick Henry. After listing his achievements, students drew conclusions on the impact Henry had on US independence. In science, students discussed food chains and food webs to show the interconnection between plants and animals.
Boys and girls in 5th grade enjoy centers designed to bring to life their study of Africa. Students studied the climate and vegetation of various regions of Africa and furthered their understanding through the centers. Students also began microscopic explorations in science and continued dividing decimals in math.
Kindergarten-2nd Grade
Kindergarten students took full advantage of the spring weather and explored the life-cycle of the frog. They discussed the importance of Earth Day and made the connection between seeds growing into flowers and growing in our love for Jesus. Additionally, boys and girls practiced writing subtraction sentences, and making and testing models in the science lab.
1st Grade
Boys and girls in 1st grade discussed the relationship between the Earth and the Sun with respect to day and night, seasonal changes, and the seasonal adaptations of plants and animals. Students also practiced telling time, sequencing events and predicting the length of time an activity requires.
2nd Grade
Second grade students are hard at work learning everything they can about Canada, including the location, landscape, weather and seasons, as well as characteristics of the people and family life. In math, students are using models to subtract two-digit numbers. Most importantly, 2nd grade students are finishing the preparation for their First Holy Communion on May 3!
Advanced Academics
Meanwhile, in advanced math, students will cover a variety of topics from geometry to temperature and measurement.

Penguin Project
Middle School
6th Grade:
Students in 6th grade explored the reciprocal relationship between absorbency and transmittance of light in transparent substances, including the relationship between the shade or concentration of a color and absorption and transmission of light. Students created an absorbance spectra, and explored how absorption, transmission, and reflection of different wavelengths of light affects the way the color of objects is perceived.
7th Grade:
Students used a microscope to observe slides using 4X, 10X, and 100X objectives, and recognized that cells from different organisms may appear similar under microscopic observation. Students prepared wet mount slides using their cheek cells, a layer of onion cells, and an Elodea leaf to compare structures.
8th Grade:
Students in 8th grade observed the effects of frictional force on motion. Boys and girls defined zero acceleration, positive acceleration and negative acceleration (deceleration) of an object. Students calculated the sum of forces and applied the Law of Conservation of Matter and Energy to the movement of a wood block.
Literature
6th Grade:
Sixth graders are finishing up their work on Bronze Bow. Students shared their culminating projects that show student understanding of the novel and the historical perspective. Immediately thereafter, students began auditioning for roles in the upcoming Medieval Day plays.
7th Grade:
Students in the 7th grade are in the final stages of their novel study as well. To show understanding of Crispin, students created and shared 3-D models and power point presentations that depict 14th century England.
8th Grade:
Eighth grade students enjoyed several different novels by Richard Peck. As they wrap up their unit study, students are sharing projects that were designed to challenge the students creatively as they created movie posters and board games to show understanding of the novel assigned.
Social Studies
6th Grade:
Sixth grade students are exploring Europe and the Middle Ages. Current focus is on feudalism and the manor system. Students will gain an understanding of the manor system and the daily lives of peasants and serfs. Additionally, students will understand the division of land and power in a feudal system.
7th Grade:
Students in 7th grade are touching on the issue of slavery and its impact on the young nation. Students are able to discuss the purpose of the Missouri Compromise and can explain why conflict arose over the issue of slavery in the western territories. In addition, students can explain the affect of Uncle Tom's Cabin on attitudes towards slavery.
8th Grade:
Eighth graders are studying the World War II era and the outbreak of the war.
Students identified how aggression led to war in Asia and Europe. Students can explain how the US responded to the outbreak of the war, and why the US finally entered the war.
Spanish
6th Grade:
Sixth graders are working hard to master past and present tense verbs and subject-verb agreement. Students continue to pray in Spanish and study the culture of the various regions in Spain. In keeping with the Lenten Season, students studied the Holy Week processions throughout Spain.
7th Grade:
Students conjugate AR verbs and continue to practice classroom object vocabulary. Seventh graders are also working on adverbs of frequency, telling time and the gender and number of nouns and adjective agreement.
8th Grade:
Eighth graders are reading and understanding written Spanish text as well as spoken statements and questions. Students continue to practice and gain mastery of Spanish grammar including indirect object pronouns.
Math:
6th Grade:
Sixth grade students returned from break to work on theoretical and experimental probability.
7th Grade:
Seventh grade students reviewed functions and graphing as well as theoretical odds and probability. Students completed classroom stations to practice real-world applications.
Pre-Algebra:
Students in Pre-Algebra worked on calculating simple and compound interest and are working on understanding functions and equations with two variables.
Intro to Algebra:
Eighth graders will find an equation of a line that is parallel or perpendicular to a given line through a given point.
Algebra:
Students in Algebra worked with the Pythagorean Theorem and multiplied, divided and simplified radicals as well as added and subtracted radicals.
Geometry:
Geometry students worked on trigonometry, and found the circumference and area of circles. Additionally, students are working with prisms and pyramids, defining terms associated with both.
Language Arts
6th Grade:
Sixth graders practiced telling a story with words and pictures and then analyzed subject and verb agreement and identified prepositional phrases. Additionally, students discussed the uses of well placed interjections.
7th Grade:
Students defined eponymns and toponyms and identified double negatives and misplaced modifiers. Seventh graders wrote original pieces with particular attention to the audience and purpose for writing.
8th Grade:
Students in 8th grade worked on counting syllables and using syllabic patterns in poetry. Students applied their poetry skills and wrote several original works.

Technology
Students in various grades are learning skills within technology classes that they can apply to life experiences. Middle school students, including the Tiger Times staff, have been introduced to and are using Google Drive to work on shared assignments while 8th grade students have been writing resumes. In conjunction with their study of Colonial Days, fourth grade students selected and researched an occupation they would have liked to have done during colonial times. The students then produced letterhead stationery and business cards for that occupation and are presently in the process of designing a poster to advertise their business.
