2017 - 2018 Nerd House Coffee Talk
Home of Ms. Smalling's Strong Brewed Crew, Issue 16
Happy Friday!
It's been such a great week....apart from that stomach bug thing. We had a class of 32 today as we inherited students from Mrs. Mozisek's class, who had to leave unexpectedly when I passed the stomach bug on to her. The students really stepped up to the plate, they worked hard, and they kept it together with all those people in a very small classroom. Serious kudos to each and every member of the Coffee House. A huge huge of appreciation to each and every one of them.
World Read Aloud Day
A big thank you to Mrs. McNeil who took time out to read to the students on February 1. We were the fortunate classroom to be chosen to celebrate World Read Aloud Day. The kids enjoyed the book Zen Shorts by Jon J. Muth, which highlights three ancient Zen tales as told by Stillwater the panda bear.
MDE Auction and Prom!!
I hope to see each and every one of you at prom tomorrow! As a child of the 80s, I cannot wait to hear the rad music and see the fab outfits. A big thank you to all those who work so hard to make this fun night happen.

Our Week In Math
Yay, measurement!!!!!! As promised, we worked hard on conversions this week. The kiddos did a fantastic job, and we will cruise in to fractions next week.
Our Week In Science
After presenting our public service announcements on the importance of conservation, we started our studies of patterns of the Earth this week. We've looked at seasons and shadows. Next week will move in to tides and phases of the moon.
Our Week In Reading
This week, beyond our fun read aloud, we looked at reviewing characteristics of the fiction genre. We answered questions about point of view, main idea, and using context clues to determine meaning of words in stories.
Our Week In Social Studies
We are currently looking at the settlement of Texas in the 1820s-1830s. Things are beginning to heat up between Stephen F. Austin and the newly formed Mexican government. Can I tell you how much I love teaching Texas History!!!!
Our Week In Word Work
We are continuing our review of affixes. Our next test will be Thursday, February 8.
Our Week In Writing
We have concentrated on fleshing out paragraphs this week. We are using the FEED (Fact, Example, Experience, Detail, Opinion Optional) strategy to make sure our paragraphs are top notch.
