Titan Community
Our first Face to Face Open House in two years is happening next week! Parents will be able to walk their students schedule, meet the teachers, and learn more about SLMS. Open House will be from 6:00-8:10 PM on Thursday, September 1st for parents and students. We will begin with performances by our orchestra, then a message from the principal and our PTO.
All of our students received planners this school year. Students are expected to carry and use their planners daily. These planners are also used as a hall pass for the students. If a student loses their planner, they can purchase a replacement one from the front office.
I am excited to announce the Sugar Land Middle School is recognized as a B rated campus based on STAAR. SLMS also earned distinctions in both Science and in Social Studies! Your SLMS teachers, students, staff, and you worked hard last year to support the learning on the campus. Thank you for your continued support.
Our PTO is currently seeking sponsorship donations. The SLMS PTO is committed to enhancing incentives, opportunities, and services for the staff and students. If you have not joined yet, please consider. Also, if you know of a business that would like to sponsor please see the business sponsorship letter in this newsletter.

Meet the SLMS Counselors!
Kimberly Seright-6th Grade Counselor
Kimberly Seright has been in the field of education for over 22 years. Mrs. Seright taught math at middle and high school levels. She has an undergraduate degree from The University of Central Florida and a Master’s Degree in Counseling from The University of Houston-Victoria. She taught math for five years in Florida before moving to Texas with her husband. One of Mrs. Seright’s favorite quotes is by Maya Angelou, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Mrs. Seright loves being a counselor and looks forward to new possibilities each and every year!
Nafecia Brinson-7th Grade Counselor
Ms. Brinson is currently serving as the 7th Grade Counselor. She has been in education for the past 17 years, serving the last 15 here in Fort Bend ISD. Prior to teaching, Ms. Brinson worked as a Forensic Scientist testing biological specimens. Although it was fun and interesting there was still something missing. She started her teaching career, teaching high school science. She has served on the campuses of Marshall HS and Kempner HS before joining the Titan Family.
Ms. Brinson received her undergraduate degree from University of South Florida and her master’s degree from the University of St. Thomas. She is the mother of a daughter in high school. You can find Ms. Brinson watching a good horror movie or baking something (anything) sweet!
Ms. Brinson stated, “It is truly a pleasure and honor to serve this community! I love to see the students grow into the great people they are destined to be!”
Eleni Smith-8th Grade Counselor
Mrs. Smith has spent over 22 years in education..19 here at SLMS as a counselor. Prior to being at SLMS, she taught 3rd grade at Oyster Creek Elementary. Mrs. Smith grew up in FBISD and is happy to raise her own children here in FBISD. She is a graduate of The University of Texas in Austin, and received her master’s degree from The University of Houston-Victoria. During football season, you can find her family fussing over Longhorn and Aggie football, as her husband is an Aggie! Her 3 girls are always out and about in Sugar Land bouncing around from activity to activity. Please say, “Hi” if you see them! She truly loves being a school counselor and getting to know all of the SLMS families. One of Mrs. Smith’s favorite quotes is by author, J.K. Rowling, “We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.”
Counseling Office Updates
All counselors will be visiting classrooms next week to introduce themselves and talk about all of the counseling office procedures and activities for the year. They will be using NAVIANCE for a goal-setting lesson, and 8th grade will get an introduction to endorsements as well as information on PSAT 8/9 which is coming up in October.
Schedule Changes:
Level changes can begin after PR1 ends on August 26. Those requests start by contacting your child’s teacher and will have a separate form to complete and sign. Level changes require a parent/teacher meeting either in person or via TEAMS or phone call.

Class Schedule
Our class schedule/bell schedule for the year features the following:
- 7 class periods daily, with an additional Advisory period on Tuesday and Wednesday
- Monday, Thursday, and Friday will have a 7-period day (50-minute class periods. except for periods 1 and 7, which are 55 minutes). MWF also has a 10-minute "Titan Time" where we do announcements and other housekeeping business; this is an additional 10-minute period added to the end of period 2
- Tuesday and Wednesday will have a 7-period day (45 to 50-minute class periods), with an additional Advisory period between period 2 and 3. Advisory will be used as a flexible time to conduct interventions, enrichments, as well as to show our broadcast/announcements, and even an opportunity for clubs and organizational meetings
- Students will have every class every day
- Students will have the same lunch period every day
- Transitions between class periods will be 5 minutes in length

Home Game Concessions
The Football and Volleyball seasons are beginning and the SLMS PTO will be selling an assortment of snacks, candies and drinks at the HOME games. Concessions sales are the PTO's second biggest fundraiser and couldn't be possible without the generous donation of our volunteers’ time! Follow the link to sign-up for a shift or two! Renaissance360 Testing
The assessments will be given during the school day. Parents will receive student score reports via family access in Skyward after the assessment window closes.

Free and Reduced Meals
The application period for Fort Bend ISD’s Free and Reduced-Price Meal program is now open. Families can complete the application online at www.schoolcafe.com/fbisd. Student meals will be available for purchase this school year, but students who qualify may receive breakfast and lunch meals at little or no cost. As a reminder, meal prices will be as followed in the 2022-23 school year:
Student Breakfast - $2.00
Elementary Lunch - $2.75
Secondary Lunch - $3.00
Completing the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application may result in additional benefits for students and families, including reduced fees and tuition for Extended Learning programs, Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses, and athletics programs. Visit the FBISD Child Nutrition webpage to learn about additional benefits.
Only one application needs to be completed for each household, and Fort Bend ISD will begin distributing letters about eligibility on August 10. To apply, parents will need to have the following information:
- Names of all household members
- Amount, frequency and source of current income for each household member
- Last four digits of the parent’s or guardian’s social security number
- Signature of an adult household member attesting that the information provided is correct
Families may apply at any time during the school year, should their household circumstances change, including the loss of a job, a decrease in household income or an increase in household size. The District uses the following criteria to determine a family’s eligibility:
- Household income that is at or below the income eligibility levels,
- Households receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservation (FDPIR), or
- Children who are in foster care, homeless, a runaway, migrant farm worker or displaced by a declared disaster, or enrolled in Head Start.
