King Community Service
The second graders at King Elementary have spent first quarter learning about community helpers and how they can make a difference in their community. They have heard from guest speakers such as firefighters, senior living advisers, security personnel, YMCA staff and more. After learning about the many different types of service jobs, the students consolidated the information by creating a "super" community helper that used symbols to demonstrate the important traits that someone needs to be a community helper. Students also wrote a short book telling what they can do to help their communities. Their final project was to perform an act of community service themselves. All the second graders went to assisted living facilities including The Inn, The Bridge, and Lifecare Center. Students sang songs, read with the residents, and played games. Overall, the students spread joy, and were even invited to come back and visit again. The students were able to see how their actions can make a difference and definitely felt good about their act of service.

D3 Honors Veterans Day
There were a lot of celebrations for veterans in our schools this week. The Mesa Ridge High School and Widefield High School Navy Junior ROTC units, along with the WHS Gladiator Marching Band, walked in the Colorado Springs Veterans Day parade last weekend. Janitell and Watson junior high school put on their annual Veterans Day assemblies complete with musical performances by the choir, band, and orchestra; special readings from students, and a military service recognition. Webster Elementary also held a special musical performance, and hosted a Donuts for Veterans event for military families. Many schools held red, white, and blue days, and others had surprise homecomings from military family members just in time for the holiday.
