Monte Vista Blue Jay Community News
Monte Vista 2023: September 25th-29th
Weekly Recap
Our grades Kinder-3rd teachers commenced conducting a new MPUSD phonics screening assessment that will be done three times a school year.
Our teachers engaged in a districtwide cross grade level vertical learning community with grade levels across the district discussing data from a commonly administered math task. Also, our staff had their monthly staff meeting and culture professional development, including a very powerful and reflective debrief on our Back to School connections experiences.
Grade 3 went to the Monterey Art Museum while Grade 4 went to Point Lobos.
Many grade levels started entering into their third and final stage (Exposition Stage) of inquiry arc quarter one. Some grade levels will have their student exhibitions this week while some will have theirs the week after Fall Break.
Our School Site Vision Council had their first online meeting of the school year this last week. They discussed the purpose, hopes, and vision for the council as well as previewing the first goal of the Single Plan for Student Achievement.
Dr. Ashby introduced the Read-A-Thon to all grade levels, which will be kicking off, Monday, September 25th.
Online and hard copy after-school club enrichment interest forms continued to roll in as the due date closed in (Monday, September 25th).
Finally our Grades 7-8 Wrestling Club continued to have fun while our Grades 7-8 Soccer teams received their uniforms and prepared for their first game, which is this upcoming Wednesday at Monte Vista at 4PM.
This is just a fraction of what happened on campus! Looking forward to our final week of September (and before Fall Break). Jay jay, chirp chirp!
Announcements for the Week
1) Read All About It! The Read-A-Thon starts this Monday, September 25th! It is one of our few fundraisers of the year, and one that helps supports many of our programs and events. It also is a huge kickoff for students to get excited about reading as we draw closer to Fall Break and also setting strong after-school reading habits for the rest of the school year! Students have already received the materials for the Read-A-Thon late last week. Also, we will have our annual fall Scholastic schoolwide book fair this week as well! Finally, we have a special Spirit Day this Friday, September 29th: Dress Like A Book Character Day! See this important email link from PTO about the Read-A-Thon, including option to do online minutes logging and donations too.
2) Please remember to be mindful of our drop off/ pick up routines by ONLY entering on Walter Colton Dr. and exiting via Toda Vista. Our ultimate goal is to keep all Blue Jay students and their families safe! Also, if you are parking (or even momentarily stopping) on Toda Vista or Via Ladera, please park in an allowed sidewalk space (not fully or partially in front of a driveway, crosswalk, or on a red painted area).
3) Please join us on Wednesday, September 27th at the Del Monte Center Chipotle for our next Dining Out event. Take out or dine in using the code in the flier below.
4) Fall Monte Vista Club interest forms should be returned (online or hard copy) by Monday, September 25th. See link HERE for the online version. You can fill this form out hard copy or online (either way). Please note that we added two more clubs to the online form (Grades 4-5 reading and Grades 4-6 Soccer and grades 3-5 Art Club switched to Mondays--no longer on Thursdays). Club notifications will go out at the beginning of Fall Break at latest. Clubs will begin Monday, October 9th. Please note: For the Fall Club session, we are only offering them to Grades 1-8. We will introduce a few Kinder age clubs in the January-March Winter session.
5) Our list of parents who have not yet completed their annual registration first day packets online is shrinking, but still has a ways to go. Our office has sent a Parent Square to these families to get this taken care of as soon as possible (these are required documents). It should only take about 10-30 minutes to do.
MPUSD Online Registration. For those families who may need support in completing the online registration, Berenice Hernandez or Anahi Gamboa, Monte Vista attendance clerk and school secretary respectively, can address any questions at this time. 831-392-3890, bhernandez@mpusd.k12.ca.us or agamboa@mpusd.k12.ca.us.
6) Grades 7-8 Monterey Co-ed Soccer Teams game schedule was released via Parent Square. Most games will be on Wednesdays and Fridays at either 4:00pm or 5:15pm. See SCHEDULE for more information.
7) Please note that weekly reading logs can be turned in to your child's teacher after each weekend. During Read-A-Thon, both weekly and read-a-thon logs can be filled out separately and simultaneously. Buttons and other prizes (for older students) will be given out as students hit higher tier levels of minutes read. Read-A-Thon is a chance to skyrocket in minutes!
8) We have great news! The Pebble Beach Company Foundation has chosen us for a Campus Beautification Day (for funding and for staff volunteer support along with all of our families and staff who come out that day). More details to come, but it will be the morning of October 28th (the morning after Monte Vista Trunk or Treat).
