- We are not able to accommodate students remaining indoors during recess unless they have a note from a doctor.
- Any child that doesn’t have snow boots will need to play on the blacktop during recess.
- Review the temperature guidelines for cold weather recess to help your child dress appropriately.

Volunteer Spotlight: Steve McCormack
I connect with several students across multiple grades.
Why did you decide to volunteer at Centerville?
I wanted to volunteer at a school nearby and I thought I might have something to offer, now that I am retired. I've always enjoyed kids and school, so I thought it would be a great mix. Kids give back so much joy and energy, and I just wanted to be connected to that.
What is your favorite part about volunteering?
The kids and the teachers! If I can make a child laugh, and get them to lean into our discussion and homework through laughter and learning ... well, that's a very good day ... and every teacher has been so helpful and thankful. Centerville Elementary is an amazing place to help out.

2nd & 4th Grade Cognitive Abilities Test Next Week
Centennial Schools will be administering the Cognitive Abilities Test to all 2nd and 4th students next week They are assessed in three domains allowing teachers to identify patterns to help improve individualized instruction. These areas are listed below for your reference. Results from these tests when be shared with families at a later time when provided by our testing company.
- Verbal: measures a child’s ability to remember and transform sequences of English words, to understand them, and to make inferences and judgments about them
- Quantitative: tests the child's understanding of basic quantitative concepts and relationships that are essential for learning mathematics
- Nonverbal: measures reasoning using pictures and geometric shapes quantitative and nonverbal
If you have any questions, please contact our main office at 763-792-5800.
Character Parade: Tuesday, October 31st @ 2PM
The Centerville Character Parade for grades preK-4 will take place on Tuesday, October 31st, at 2:00 P.M, and parents are welcome to come and watch it. As we get closer, we will send out more details regarding the parade route and viewing.
What type of costume should my student wear for the Character Parade?
We ask that all families choose a costume that is non-violent/scary. These are day costumes and may differ from something a student wishes to wear in the evening. Examples of appropriate character costumes are sports figures, historians, fairy tale characters, occupational outfits, storybook characters, heroes, etc. A source of reference is if the character is from a PG13 or Rated R movie, it is inappropriate for school. Examples of costumes that would not be appropriate are zombies, Scream, Freddy Krueger, anything with blood, etc. No play or real weapons are ever allowed on school grounds. If you are wondering if a costume is appropriate, don't hesitate to contact Mr. Macken, as we want this to be a fun event for everyone participating. Finally, if your student wants to participate but needs help getting a costume, please contact the school office at 763-792-5800
If you prefer that your child not participate in the character parade please complete this form to request an alternative activity.

Play October-themed games
Use the month as inspiration for word games. Great for road trips!
With your child:
• Create words using the letters in the word October. How many
can you each come up with?
• Brainstorm a list of words that begin with the letter O. Ask your student to put them in alphabetical order. Then, have your child write a sentence for each word and read it to you.

Minnesota law requires children enrolled in childcare, early childhood education, or school to be immunized against certain diseases unless the child is medically or non-medically exempt.
If proper documentation is not provided, students will be unable to attend school after November 1, 2023. What you need to do:
- Contact your healthcare provider and review your student’s immunization status to ensure they are current.
- If you missed a required vaccination, make an appointment with a healthcare provider or local clinic as soon as possible.
- Follow up with your student’s school if they have contacted you regarding your student’s immunization status.
- Turn in medical (must be signed by health care provider) and non-medical (must be notarized) exemption forms to your child’s school.
Visit the MDH website for vaccine schedules, exemption forms, and more information including where to get free/low-cost immunizations today. Please reach out to your student’s school for any questions. Please note, that K-12 immunization status is available on Campus Parent Portal.
Kindergarten Preview at Centennial Schools
The Centennial School District invites families of kindergarten students, eligible to enroll in the 2024-2025 school year, to Kindergarten Preview. Each elementary school in the district (Blue Heron, Centennial, Centerville, Golden Lake, and Rice Lake) will host a preview on October 24, 9:45am-10:30am. This is a great opportunity to tour the school, ask questions, and give prospective students a fun and memorable experience. Call your neighborhood school to sign up! This free event is one opportunity for families to connect with the school; attendance is optional.
National School Lunch Week: October 16-18
Centennial Schools will celebrate National School Lunch Week October 16-18. The National School Lunch Program serves nearly 30 million children every school day. Not only does the program help reduce childhood hunger, it also supports American agriculture.
