A Note from Dr. Hitchman...
I hope you and your family are doing well and enjoyed a wonderful summer break. We look forward to welcoming 1480 students to Lightridge High School on Thursday, August 26. While we will have to follow health mitigation protocols, it is exciting to have students and teachers in-person this year. I would like to thank those families who were able to join us in July for an informal tour of the building. It was great to make initial connections and lay the foundation for a successful school year. I would also like to thank those families who so graciously donated to our Founding Family Banner. We are currently accepting donations and names for a second banner which will be displayed outside the cafeteria.
The start of the 2021-2022 school year is going to be like no other. We recognize the fact that many of our students have not been inside a school building or classroom in almost 18 months. Our teachers are aware of this as well and plan on spending class time getting to know our students and building positive relationships on day one. Many of our staff members also have children who are in school and know what it is like to be a working parent. We also recognize that many of our students are in different places with their learning. As we address schooling loss, we will be administering formative, non-graded assessments in reading and math to identify our students strengths and areas which may need improvement. When we know where are students are in regards to their learning, we can then personalize the instruction to meet their needs, passions, and interests.
We also know it is important to make early connections with our families. We hope you are able to join us for our Lightridge Kickoff Celebration on Friday, August 27 from 4:30-7:00 pm. We will have games, activities, food trucks, and more. We also hope you are able to stay for our first home football game of the year which begins at 7:00 pm against Park View. We also hope you are able to join us for our Parent Back to School Night which will be held on Wednesday, September 8 from 6:00-8:00 pm. I also plan on facilitating Principal Coffee and Chats this year. Our first Coffee & Chat will be held on Friday, September 17 beginning at 8:15 am. In an effort to have as much participation as possible, the Coffee & Chat session on the 17th will be virtual and the link will be shared with parents the week of the session. I would also like to invite you to participate in our Principal for a Day program where parents, guardians, or community members can shadow me for the day and see for yourselves the amazing things which occur at Lightridge. More information regarding the Principal for a Day program will be shared during our Back to School Night.
Finally, I would like to recognize that you send your most precious resource to us ...your children. The safety and security of our students and staff is a top priority. While we have multiple security measures in place when parents and visitors arrive, please know they are in the name of safety. We appreciate your cooperation, patience, and understanding when visiting Lightridge during the school day. Thank you for taking the time to read our newsletter and together, we light the way.
SETTING UP YOUR STUDENTVUE
- You will need your student ID. If you don't have it, your parent can get it from their ParentVue (which they created when they registered) OR email your counselor and they would be happy to provide.
- Your default password is LCPS-MMDDYY (MMDDYY is the Month, Day, Year of the students date of birth).
- Sign in to LCPS GO
- Once you are signed into LCPS GO it will ask you to update your password. Once that password is updated it is what you will use to access most items within LCPS GO, including student vue.
- Once in with your email (studentid@lcps.org) and the default password above, click on the StudentVUe icon.
- You should be all set!!!
If you have any device, login, account, or password issues, please contact Nathan.Tye@lcps.org, our Digital Experience Specialists (DES).
Student Schedules
Counselor contact information can be found online.
Scheduling FAQs:
- Can I change my teacher?
No. Only if you had the teacher in a previous class and did not pass the class with that teacher - Can I change my schedule?
- Do you have a schedule error? If so then yes!
- Do you want to make a change? Unfortunately, the answer is no. The deadline to add a Dual Enrollment course was May 1, and final course request changes were due by June 24. Level changes will be considered on a space available basis AFTER the first week of school when all new students are registered and course numbers have been confirmed.
- What is a schedule error?
- you do not have a complete schedule or are missing a core class required for graduation
- you are signed up for a class you have already passed.
- you are signed up for two classes at the same time.
- you are signed up for a class you do not have the prerequisite for.
- What if I am not doing well in a class? Can I make a schedule change?
- After 1st quarter interim if you would like to request a schedule change, please follow these procedures. You will need to make a formal request through our online schedule change form (available at interim). Prior to making a schedule change request, we encourage students to do the following:
- talk to your teacher and discuss your concerns and fears
- work with your teacher on strategies for improvement
- complete all coursework and homework, this allows the teacher to understand where you are struggling and offer appropriate feedback
- use learning lab time to get extra assistance, you selected this course out of interest and ability - work at it!
- speak with your counselor to understand any schedule change implications for the year or graduation.
- Completion of a schedule change form does not guarantee that the change will be made. Rather, it will initiate the formal process for consideration.
- As stated in the LCPS Program of Studies:
- Requests to drop down in rigor level from an accelerated yearlong course (i.e., from an Honors level to an Academic level) may not be considered prior to the Interim Time of the First Marking Period or after Interim Time of the Third Marking Period unless otherwise deemed necessary by the building principal/designee.
- Prior to requesting a drop down in rigor level, communication between student, teacher, parent or guardian, and counselor should take place to support the student in their attempted strategies for success at the selected level of rigor.
- If after attempted strategies for success and collaboration with all involved parties, a drop down in rigor level is still requested, the request is passed on to the building principal/designee to be reviewed for approval.
- If approved, a request to drop down in rigor level will only be made if space is available in the desired course level. The schedule change may require changing other courses and/or teachers within the student’s schedule. School administration will determine final placement of new course (course block and teacher).
- Course grades earned in previous accelerated course will transfer to new course level. The student may be responsible for completing make-up work in the new level to cover any material not covered in the previous level.
- After 1st quarter interim if you would like to request a schedule change, please follow these procedures. You will need to make a formal request through our online schedule change form (available at interim). Prior to making a schedule change request, we encourage students to do the following:

GET INVOLVED!!!
Lightridge High School encourages students to actively engage in volunteer service throughout high school. Students who demonstrate a strong commitment to service, as evidenced by completing 100 or more hours of service by April of their senior year, will earn a service cord to be worn at graduation. Loudoun County Public Schools does not require volunteer service hours for graduation.
In order to qualify for a service cord, students must submit their volunteer hours each year during the eligibility period for each school year. The Lightridge Volunteer Service Form can be completed as many times as needed throughout the academic year to document multiple volunteer activities and service hours. Students may only count volunteer service hours from the summer before 9th grade through April of senior year. Happy volunteering!

Instructional Resources Requiring Parental Consent
Throughout the school year, teachers will be utilizing digital resources for instruction that require parental consent. Instead of each teacher sending individual Permission Clicks and parents approving/denying the same resource eight times, Lightridge has decided to send out one for all teachers. Terms of Use and Privacy Policy will be included for your perusal. It will be sent out to parent/guardian emails listed in Phoenix by August 23rd, and only needs to be completed by one parent/guardian.
