KB Classroom Update 19

Parent Update

With the weather getting fabulous, we have been enjoying the outdoors more and more each day! We continue to build on our relationships as we practice our power talk steps and other strategies we have learned to express our feelings in our classroom community. We continue to stay busy at work here in KB as we start towards our last units of the school year. We are learning about life cycles and growth for our last lB unit, but we are also applying our learning to our classwork. We are Super Readers! We are Super Writers! We are Super Mathematicians! We are Super KB Friends!

We are Learning, Grow Grow Grow!

We are playing, Go Go Go!

Specials in Kindergarten B!

Español with Ms. Rosado

¡A crecer en Español! KB grow, crecer, grow, crecer, grow, crecer, grow and crecer muy rápido. We continue our immersion process, through songs, total physical response, games, theater, art and now writing!!!!! Yes, we are getting ready to write en Español using individual whiteboards!!!!

We love to play the game a crecer; everyone in a circle and one friend stay in the center. Whoever is in the center hides under a piece of fabric, like an egg. Everyone starts to sing the song a crecer, a crecer… our friend starts to grow little by little until it became an animal or a plant, then we take turns to guess, ¿Qué es? ¡Muy divertido!

The past week, we are working on creating our own animal books to practice our reading and writing skills. ¡Excelente Trabajo KB! Let´s keeping growing - A CRECER!

Muchas Gracias,

Ms. Rosado

Dance with Ms. Siby

Kindergarten students jumped into their Brazilian dance unit, learning the exciting carnival dance, Frevo! This high energy dance has our students, kicking, jumping, twisting and turning to traditional Carnival music, in preparation for BPCS' Olympic Opening Ceremony, on Wednesday, June 22nd from 11:30am-12:30pm! We also had brave friends volunteer to come up and show off some of the dance skills that they learned from the video. Check out the pictures below!

Please feel free to play our Frevo song at home so your dancer can practice. Also, please enjoy video footage of the young Frevo dancers, that inspired our choreography.

*Urgent Request: if anyone knows where to find small umbrellas (sans Disney characters) that our dancers can use for their culminating performance, please send me an e-mail: rsiby@brooklynprospect.org. Thank you!

Music with Ms. Raccio

April and May were an exciting time for us in Music, where KB students enjoyed a special combination of Music and Science! We learned about the lifecycle of butterflies, sang songs about the changes that butterflies undergo, and even raised our own butterflies in the classroom! We ended the unit by releasing the butterflies at Metrotech. Please check out the pictures and videos below to join us in the process.

  • On June 10th, we land in Cairns, Australia and will be swimming through The Great Barrier Reef! Students should bring goggles or snorkel gear - if they already have some. Continue to have your students solve those math problems and bring them to class. This is a great opportunity to have use work on quick math facts, such as adding and subtracting number sentences or filling in number bonds.

  • Please check out our sign up to help out with our trip to Australia. We are especially looking for volunteers to help with setting up Thursday afternoon. We are also looking for boogie boards, surfboards, wetsuits and snorkel equipment, please! Many thanks!

  • Our school is focusing on a school-wide goal of reaching a million math problems. To engage the students, we call this Math Olympics, where each math problem they solve goes towards flying an imaginary plane along an international route that will eventually get us to Rio de Janeiro, the host city for the summer Olympics. Every student at BPCS should solve at least 29 math problems a day (outside of school) in order to fuel this trip.
  • Families are invited to our Spring Curriculum Share on June 27th from 9:15-11:15am. Students will share what they have been working on through our third Inquiry unit on "Growth."
  • In hopes of having our students be good citizens not only in the classroom but also outside of the classroom, we are going to begin: 1) incorporating situations into our daily role playing of different scenarios and also 2) give shout-outs at the end of the day during closing circle. Please email us different scenarios you want us to reenact, as well as examples of praise-worthy shout-outs...small or big!
