· Future Leaders
· Drop-Off/Pick-Up
As you peruse the photos of readers you’ll notice one striking pattern, older students working with younger students. I love to see our “future leaders” step up and facilitate a learning opportunity, while nurturing a skill or character trait. Time and time again our more experienced and seasoned students take the helm and provide support for our younger students, in such Montclair programs as Bus Buddies, Buddy Room tutors, 5th Grade Mentors, Expectation Station Student Support, author shares, and even on the playground. Our older students are the next generation of leaders in our community, and we’re eager to offer them opportunities to flex their leadership and altruistic muscles.
School has begun and with it a higher frequency of traffic in our small parking lot, which is why I like to take this time of the year to highlight some simple parking lot etiquette so we’re all successful dropping off and picking up our children. Please note, the most important thing to remember is safety – how ever one navigates the parking lot, we ALL must commit to being safe and respectful.
· Morning Drop-Off: Starting at 8:10 our staff are assigned in the parking lot to manage traffic and assist students arriving. If you every have a question about the system they would be happy to answer questions.
o Do NOT speed – We never know when a child will dart out from behind a car.
o Center Lane traffic has the right-of-way, so cars driving through in the outside lane must proceed with caution.
o Do pull forward in the center lane as far as possible when arriving, so that the string of cars doesn’t block the parking lot entrance and buses can get around the center island.
o Do NOT drop off your child curb side once staff are in place at 8:10 AM.
o Staff will open doors and help student to the curb, so please remain in your car.
o Encourage older students to open their doors and make their way to curb safely. This speeds up the process, as younger students sometime take longer to unload.
· Afternoon Pick-Up: This process is slightly more complicated, as we technically have two systems in play.
o BUSES have curbside priority between 3:05 – 3:15.
o Parents/guardians arriving between 3:05-3:15 should park and meet their child(ren) at the exterior, Library door on the east end of the building.
o Please be mindful when crossing the parking lot and try to use the crosswalks/sidewalks.
o Mind the Yellow Line along the sidewalk as approaching bus mirrors cross over the curb and enter that space.
o CAR PICK-UP: Starts at 3:15 PM. Please do NOT arrive earlier than 3:15 to allow for the buses to depart.
§ ALL vehicles MUST have a Yellow Sign (obtained from office)
§ Once buses have left and/or at 3:15 drive along the curb and proceed as far forward along the curb toward the east end of the building.
§ Wait patiently along the curb and proceed with caution, following staff instructions.
§ Do have your Yellow Sign visible on the passenger side of the windshield.
§ Proceed to staging area to assist children with seatbelts, as we want to keep traffic moving (Staging area is along east end of parking lot near fence line)
Working together we can ensure that every child gets to school safely and every child returns home safely. If ever a situation transpires that you need assistance with don’t hesitate to connect with either a staff member or myself. And remember the Montclair way - safety and respectfulness.
Fun Run 2018
Our Fun Run is only about 2 weeks away, on September 28th! The pledge/donation envelopes went home today, so please check your children’s backpacks. We have a financial goal of $20,000 again this year, which will all go directly back to the school for things like field trips, PE and library equipment, classroom supplies, and general support for our students and staff. We thank you in advance for continuing this important effort to help us reach this goal. If your child secures a handful of pledges from family and friends, together we can make this goal. Please support your child and encourage them to reach out to their community to secure donations (only when accompanied by an adult, please).
The Fun Run’s success hinges not only on pledges and laps, but also on volunteers -- it
takes a village to keep all those runners on course! Please consider supporting Montclair
by signing up for a volunteer shift. Also, we’d love to see you out there running with, or
cheering on your child during the Fun Run. After all, it’s a big accomplishment to run all
those laps and secure all those pledges! It’s a great opportunity to really feel the
Montclair Redtail Hawk pride and spirit as the kids report how many laps they ran!
Please feel free to reach out to any of the Fun Run team with questions!
