ELA
Hi ya! My name is Miss Cook and I will be your student's ELA teacher for the year. It was a great time getting to know all my students, and they really seem like a fun group of kids to teach. I am very excited about this year already!
Next week, we will be going over the 1st Quarter Reading Journal, making sure all students have a free reading book, setting up our ELA notebooks, and learning how to login into NoRedInk.
Attached below is my Syllabus and Expectations for class if you are curious about how my classroom will be set up with routines, procedures, and units.
Science
Our first unit in science will be the Metric System. We will learn how to measure length/width, mass, volume, and temperature using metric units. We will be doing a lot of hands-on
measuring.
Math
Hello, 6th-grade Students and Families!!
I hope that everyone had a great first week back to school, I know I enjoyed meeting and starting to get to know everyone this past week. My name is Ms. Klingele, and I am the 6th grade Math teacher for students this year. I am excited to start our journey into Mathematics this year!
I am attaching my syllabus below in case you did not receive the email I sent out on Tuesday. A scavenger hunt on the first slide highlights a few of the main points of the syllabus linked on the slide show for students to complete. I did collect supplies this week for math class. We have started to put together our binders in class and they have been placed on the shelves in the classroom. I have let students know that they can take their binders whenever they want, but they also know it is okay to leave them in the classroom. We will continue to set up binders over the next couple of weeks as we get into our curriculum. Students will keep their calculators in their backpacks so they will have them with them at any time they may need them.
Next week, we will prepare for our first topic of the year, Using Positive Rational Numbers, by taking a readiness assessment and reviewing a few math concepts from past years. We also are tentatively planning on taking STAR MATH before the end of the week. We will delve headfirst into our new concepts right after Labor Day with operations with decimals! In math class, I will have regular homework every Monday (due Wednesday) and Wednesday (due Friday). This homework will first be assigned on Wednesday, September 8th, and will be due Friday, September 10th. I have told students and want to remind them here that we will only be using calculators to check our work for this topic, so they will not be using them while doing work. After this unit, they will be using them while working on learning our new math concepts.
I am super excited for this school year and remember if you have any questions, please email me at klingelb@platteco.k12.mo.us.
Social Studies
It has been a great first week back at Barry School. This week has been filled with introductions and getting to know each other. We have been establishing our classroom routines and having open discussions about expectations and classroom procedures. Students will have gone over the social studies handbook in class. Students will be bringing the 6th Grade Social Studies Handbook home Friday to have signed. Please review the handbook with your student and sign, and return the handbook cover back to me by next Wednesday, September 1, 2021
Over the next two weeks, we will be beginning our unit on an introduction to geography.
We will be looking at how the physical and human characteristics of places and regions are connected to human identities and cultures.
I am excited about the new school year. If you need to reach me the best way to contact me is by email griffinb@platteco.k12.mo.us
Here is to a great year, GO PIRATES!
Specials
PE
We've started the year by going over our expectations which include having the proper attire (tennis shoes and clothes that the students can move around in) as well as playing some fun games. We will start our beginning-of-year Fitness Testing next week to get a baseline score in the different fitness areas.

Art
My name is Troy Elliott, and I am the art teacher at Barry. I am looking forward to seeing our students' creativity and exploration this school year. I have the following items on my 6th grade supplies list that I am able to collect anytime:
(1) Crayola Markers
(2) Fine point black sharpies
Erasers
World Language
If you have any questions or concerns, please email Mrs. Lackey at lackeyt@platteco.k12.mo.us.
Computers
I am Michelle Delaney, and I teach 6th grade Computer Literacy, 7th grade PLTW: Computer Science for Innovators and Makers, and 8th grade PLTW: App Creators. Sixth graders who have Computer Literacy on their schedules for first quarter will be in my class as soon as school starts.
We will begin with some basic file management and organization, and then we'll move on to the Google Apps used most in middle school. Along the way, we'll learn about online safety, practice typing skills, and dabble in animation and digital design. I am so excited to get started!
The only special supply needed for computer literacy is a set of earbuds with wires. The desktops computers in my class do not have Bluetooth, so their Airpods or other wireless headphones will not work.
I look forward to a great year!
