Ridgeview STEM Junior High
Weekly Update - December 20, 2017
A Message from the Principal
Dear Tiger families,
Wow, the first half of the year has just flown by! It seems like it was just August! As quickly as the first half of the year has gone by, the second half will go by even faster. We would like to take this time to mention a few of the big things coming up in 2018. Ridgeview will be participating in the following; a Statewide Design Challenge for STEM schools, College and Career Planning Night, student scheduling for 18-19, and our annual Service-Learning Day at the end of the school year, May 23.
Starting this week, we are introducing a Design Challenge to all of our students. This year’s challenge deals with heart health. The design challenge is a great opportunity for your student to develop the soft skills needed to succeed in high school and their career later on in life. Students on each team will choose 3 - 5 members from their team to collaborate with. Students will work together to develop a solution for this health concern. Each group will present their ideas to their team teachers. The teams will choose the top group(s) to represent each team. Last year, we had about 7 - 8 groups of students selected to present at Battelle.
There will be scheduled times in the next couple of months to facilitate this process. The design challenge will not affect anyone’s grade, but we do stress the students work through the process. It is a great educational experience.
College and Career Night will be held on January 24th, 2018. The event will be held at Ridgeview. Pizza will be served at 5 PM and the event will start at 6 PM. It is never too early to start planning! We hope to see you there. See the flyer in this newsletter for more details.
Scheduling courses for next school year will start around February or March. The decisions you and your student make will drive their schedule for the 2018-19 school year. Please carefully read the course guide when it comes home with your student and guide them in making the best decisions.
Each year, Ridgeview participates in our annual MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY. This day is about giving back to the community. Ridgeview students will be going out into the community to lend a helping hand. Last year our students did a tremendous job representing Ridgeview and helping those in need. It truly is a wonderful, rewarding event. Our students really enjoy the experience, and the community appreciates their efforts.
We are always looking for parent volunteers to help! If you are interested let us know. There will be information later in the year on this event and how YOU can make a difference!
Finally, we all know the Holiday season can be a stressful time. This does not exclude our students. Please talk to you students about respecting others during school. We want to ensure everyone has a good Holiday season.
The staff at Ridgeview would like to take this time to wish everyone Happy Holidays! We hope everyone has a safe and relaxing break! Happy New Year and we will see you in 2018!
Happy Holidays,
Eric Koch, Principal

Chromebooks and the Winter Break
Please encourage your child to develop a routine of plugging in the device each evening. We appreciate your support and help with this issue as it is an expectation that ALL students come to school with a charged device ready to be used each day.
With Winter Break just around the corner, we need your help to keep the Chromebooks in good working order. Our district techs have noted that after winter break is when they tend to see an increase in damaged devices. Please review the attached HELPFUL HINTS to avoid costly repairs, thank you.
