LSES Weekly Update
Exceptional things happen here!
Week of February 15-19
Principal's Message
Dear families,
Our focus this month has been in reading, comprehension, and applying what we learn to real life situations. Students should be reading at least 20 minutes every day in order to improve their skills. Make reading a part of your family time! You can also read to your student and ask questions about it to increase their comprehension skills. Students can read a book, a magazine, directions to a recipe, a comic book, or information about a particular product at the store. It is important that they familiarize with the different types of written text that we come across in our daily lives. Also, you may help your students by asking questions about everyday life to help them use the skills they learn in school to solve those problems. Parents are the first and most important teachers in a student’s life!
Have a wonderful week,
Carmen Brodniak

A peek into the 5th grade...
Hello friends and family of LSES 5th graders!
We have sure had a busy year in science! The students have been demonstrating some extraordinary skills in writing, art, projects, labs, and more. Two of our most recent projects were our Silly Putty Lab and our Water Footprint Pledge Project.
During our Silly Putty Lab, the students were able to create their own silly putty and complete a three-day lab following the scientific method. This was great practice in preparing for this year’s Science Fair, which you will be hearing more about at the end of February. You will also be receiving a detailed project packet for their projects at that time as well. The Science Fair will take place on April 28th.
In addition to our work using the scientific method, we participated in a Water Footprint Pledge Project in which the students investigated the scarcity of freshwater on Earth and analyzed their individual water footprint. Working through the organization “Change the Course” (www.changethecourse.us), a project dedicated to giving back 1,000 gallons of water to the Colorado River for those who pledge to shrink their water footprint, the students and myself were able to write a pledge paper giving back 81,000 gallons of freshwater to the Colorado River! As a class, my students were amazed to see the impact that their contribution made to restore one of America’s most historic and socially important river systems.
Please check out the photos of our 5th graders at work and in action!
Blessings to you all,
Mrs. Schmidt

Why is it so important to attend every day?
• Learning is a progressive activity; each day's lessons build upon those of the previous day(s).
• Reading the material and completing work independently does not compensate for the loss of insight gained during class discussion or the loss of competency acquired through explanation or supervised drill.
• Many classes use lectures, discussions, demonstrations, experiments and participation as part of the daily learning activities, and these cannot be made up by those who are absent.
• Regular student participation in daily classroom activities plays a significant role in a student's school success. Are there other benefits to my child?
• Students with good attendance records generally achieve higher grades and enjoy school more.
• Having a good education will help to give your child the best possible start in life.
• Regular school attendance patterns encourage the development of other responsible patterns of behavior.
• Students who develop an "on the job" attitude toward school will be more desirable to future employers.

3rd grade visits OMSI
Last week, the 3rd grade visited OMSI - Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. The students started off their field trip with a 3D movie about the migration of the Monarch butterfly. Afterwards, students had lunch and then explored the many hands on exhibits focused on natural sciences, industry, and technology.
