Get Ready To See Africa
Information for 4 of Africa's Most Beautiful Places
Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro, located in northeast Tanzania, is the highest mountain in Africa. And extinct volcano, Mount Kilimanjaro rises in two peaks, Kibo (19,340 feet) and Mawenzi (17,654 feet). Some small wildlife, like dik-diks and sunbirds, may be seen here, and out of the 7 climbing routes, the Machame is the most scenic, albeit steeper, route. The easiest route would be the Rongai, which is the least scenic.
Indian Ocean
The Indian Ocean is the third-largest ocean in the world, extending from south Asia to Antarctica and from east Africa to southeast Australia. A large rift (crack or fissure), and extension of the Great River Valley, extends along most of the ocean's length. The marine life include seals, dugong, turtles, and whales. It also has various seamount chains and ridges, all produced by hotspots. Makes for great swimming, but stay near the land!
Atlas Mountains
The Atlas Mountains is a system of ranges and plateaus in northwest Africa, extending 1,500 miles from southwest Morocco through Algeria to north Tunisia. The Atlas Mountains are rich in minerals, especially phosphates, coal, iron, and oil. Great hiking destination, and possibly nice for camping.
Kalahari Desert
The Kalahari Desert is an arid plateau region that spans three countries and covers 100,00 square miles in southern Africa. Covered largely by reddish sand, the Kalahari lies between the Orange and Zambezi Rivers and is dotted with dry lake beds. The climate is semi-arid, but not that bad. It may get only 110 mm of rainfall a year, so I wouldn't recommend staying there. But it's great for site-seeing.
