Breakout!

4th graders completed a breakout box challenge and solved puzzles related to the book “The Kid in the Red Jacket.” They celebrated completing their book study and “unlocked” the next book that will be read. Both the yellow and blue teams successfully “broke out” in fewer than the allotted 35 minutes with the yellow team completing the challenge in 23 minutes and the blue team in 29 minutes!

Giant-Round Up at the Register

The Methacton School District is once again partnering with the GIANT Company on a special school program to help support our students. From now through February 28, 2022, GIANT customers can “ROUND UP AT THE REGISTER” to support the Methacton Backpack Program. Customers at the local GIANT (Egypt Road) can “round up” their grocery total at the register and the cumulative total of all the “spare change” donated will go into a fund for the Methacton School District. Last year, this fundraiser awarded more than $6,600 to the Methacton Backpack Program.

Standards Based Grading

The Methacton School District uses a standards-based grading system for students in grades K-4. This system helps us more accurately measure students’ mastery of PA Core Academic Standards in all subjects. The elementary report cards have been revised to reflect the changes to the state standards and Methacton’s curricula. The goal of this approach to reporting is to provide parents, students, and teachers with a detailed picture of what students know and are able to demonstrate. The information provided on the report card encourages dialogue about areas of strength and need, and how our students can continue to grow academically.

This article, Seven Reasons for Standards-Based Grading, explains more about standards-based grading.

As your child’s teacher explained during our Back-to-School night, I CAN statements have been developed to share with you what skills your child is being assessed on and the expectation of mastery for each trimester. The I CAN statements are listed on our MSD Family Center.

Counselor's Corner

While honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this week, it is the perfect time to introduce students to the concept that they are the same and different as other human beings. In third grade we are learning about human diversity while exploring race, gender, ethnicity and socio economic status. Students have been encouraged to learn about where their ancestors came from as a way to celebrate our individual cultures. Lori Shaw, School Counselor - 610-489-5000 X41207 or LShaw@methacton.org
