Skyline K-8 News
February 28, 2020
From the Principal
Happy Friday!
This week was an exciting week at Skyline K-8 in Mrs. Porter’s class. On Monday, Kindergarten students had a tea party as a reward for filling up their compliment jar last Thursday. On Wednesday afternoon they had their third Publishing Party. The kindergarten students were proud of their three-page narrative story. Way to go Kindergarten!
Our 7th-grade students had the opportunity to go on a three day STEM field trip this week. Thank you to our teachers who chaperoned the trip.
Next Friday, Melinda Gale will be coming from Lincoln with high school students to give an AVID presentation to all 8th grade students.
A huge thank you to Mr. Grivel and Mrs. Barten for teaching staff our school song for Skyline K-8, Where Eagles Soar at the staff meeting on Tuesday. We will be learning and sharing our song with students at our next IB assembly on March 18th. You are all welcome to come sing along at the assembly.
Grab your gardening gloves and tools and join a group of amazing parents and community members tomorrow from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. to help spruce up the grounds at school. We will be raking and trimming, filling in some chip gravel, and planning for the installation of new outdoor benches. Coffee, water, and snacks provided. A huge shout out to Leslie Boyd for organizing this Community Care Day!
Our annual Skyline K-8 Auction is coming up on March 14th! This is a fun night where our community comes together and shows support for Skyline K-8. Many staff members and I will be there and we hope to see you there too. Last year’s auction paid for our educational assistant, Mrs. Ferguson, and over half of a teacher’s salary. You can get your tickets at: skylineauction.com Tickets prices go up March 1st.
Have a wonderful weekend!
All the best,
Mrs. Aguirre

State Testing
We have finalized our state testing schedule for the 2020 year. In order to space out the testing for grade levels, accommodate for MAP testing and allow for instruction to continue, our 5th and 8th-grade students will begin their Science testing on the week of April 7th. I will keep everyone posted on what grades will be testing and when we get closer. Please remember that all Opt-Out forms need to be turned in 30 days prior to testing the beginning. It can take 24 - 48 hours just for the paperwork to be processed and the testing department has asked that we not wait until the last minute to ensure that students who have opted out are blocked from the testing site and teachers can make arrangements for what they would like students to do while others are testing.
Please let me know if you need any forms and please know that there is a separate form to Opt-Out of Science. There is not an Opt-Out form for MAP tests, for students can not opt-out of this assessment. The MAP assessment is a district-mandated assessment that teachers use to better inform their instruction, set goals and support student success.
If you ever have any questions or concerns always feel free to reach out to me. I will always share information that I receive from the district to best communicate with the Skyline Community.

Skyline Gymnasium – hands-on activities
Skyline Cafeteria – potluck dinner
In April, Skyline PTA is hosting a schoolwide STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) Night! Everyone is invited! Our gym will be filled with different hands-on activities and stations for you and your kids to experience together. There will be a potluck dinner in the cafeteria, too. No need to worry about making dinner ahead of time! Just come! It’s going to be a fun-filled CELEBRATION of all things STEAM.
BUT, we need your help! We’re looking for adult volunteers to run the interactive activities (one volunteer per activity). We've got a list of suggested activities, but welcome your own. Each activity should last about 10 minutes. All activities need to be conducted in the gym itself. No experience in STEAM required! But certainly, if you work in STEAM on a daily basis, PLEASE HELP! Contact me! Email: skylineschoolpta@gmail.com
We hope STEAM Night will spark enthusiasm for STEAM in our children and engage families, foster connections, and encourage lifelong learning!

Skyline Reunification Drill
May 22, 2020
WHAT: A Reunification Drill practices reconnecting families and students in the event of an emergency such as an earthquake. Every month during school hours, Skyline practices emergency response drills, i.e. fire drill, lockdown, lockout, earthquake. A Reunification Drill builds on in-school drills by involving families.
WHEN: Friday, May 22, 2020, 2-4 p.m. (with a pause at 3 p.m. for normal dismissal)
HOW: For the Reunification Drill, parents, guardians, and/or individuals designated by you to pick up your child/ren will go to the Parent Check-In Station. Those picking up students MUST present a photo ID and be on the "Skyline Reunification Drill Form" pick-up list (to be distributed via email and in backpacks at a later date - keep an eye out!) to pick up a student.
OPTING OUT: This is an important drill that will inform us all on how best to reunite families and students in case of an emergency. We hope that everyone will participate so we can all learn and improve. That said, we understand that taking time off work is not an option for many people. If this is the case, please consider designating someone to pick up your child/ren so that they can participate. On the "Skyline Reunification Drill Form," you'll select "OPT-OUT" and indicate how your student will get home at the 3:00 p.m. or 3:20 p.m. dismissal (bus, Kids Place, normal parent pickup).

Skyline Green Team
You're Invited!
Please Join PTA's Green Team After School Club!
As a premier-level certified Green School, Skyline has many initiatives that promote environmental awareness and sustainability: the 4th and 5th graders lead the recycling program, food waste is composted in the kitchen and lunchroom, and our classrooms all have party packs that reduce single-use materials, to name a few. But we can do more!
The Green Team Club is an after-school, weekly opportunity for students to get involved and make an impact! The club will meet every Thursday from 3:15-4:45. Students in 4-8th grades are invited to participate. Participation will be initially limited to the first 20 students to apply. The application involves a statement of interest and commitment to participate, as well as parental permission. The forms are available in the office.
The vision for the club is to promote awareness of global and local environmental issues, encourage responsible research, engage in discussions, and take action on a local level. These are the themes and questions we’ll start with...where the kids take them and what actions they create are up to them!
