Principals' Post
This week, we received notification that Glen Oaks School has been nominated for the 2019 National Blue Ribbon. Glen Oaks was first honored with this coveted award in 2012.
The National Blue Ribbon criteria includes overall student assessment scores, student-subgroup assessment scores, and student graduation rates. There are two National Blue Ribbon categories. A school wins the award for being either an Exemplary High Performing School or an Exemplary Achievement Gap-Closing School.
Exemplary High Performing Schools are defined as the highest performing schools as measured by the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) Assessment or nationally normed tests.
Exemplary Achievement Gap-Closing Schools are schools that are highest performing in closing achievement gaps between a school’s subgroups and all students over the past five years.
As many as sixteen outstanding public schools can be nominated from Illinois for the National Blue Ribbon Schools award. Glen Oaks has been nominated as an Exemplary High Performing School.
We are extremely proud of this honor and value your partnership in our learning community!
Partners in education,
Mrs. Kristin Reingruber, Principal

Glen Oaks Spotlight - PE Department
Mr. Boam
This is my 9th year at District 117 and my third year coming to Glen Oaks. I am here everyday for one period, then go to Dorn for the rest of the day. I live in the western suburbs with my two beautiful, smart, loving children who are 7 years old (first grade) and 3 years old.
Some of my favorites are...
Watching the Cubbies, Bears, Blackhawks, and Duke Basketball.
My favorite food is pizza.
My favorite color is blue.
My favorite animal is a grizzly bear.
I enjoy going to the gym, playing golf, swimming, and being outside.
We see the students three times a week for 42 minutes. We try and utilize as much as we can in those minutes to try and show them the importance of staying healthy. Recently, we did a tic-tac-toe activity that the students loved.

Winter Weather Reminders
The change in the weather brings conditions that call for us to be extra cautious when driving. We ask that you please follow procedures and directions given by our arrival and dismissal staff when dropping off or picking up your child from school. Our procedures are put in place not only for efficiency, but for the safety of you, your child, and our staff members. We ask that, when a staff member approaches your car, please have your child safely and quickly exit the vehicle.
The cold temperatures and the snow are here to stay for the next few months. Often times, the winter weather limits the children’s outdoor activities. Barring any unsafe situations and adverse weather conditions, we WILL have the children go outside each day for recess, provided they have the necessary clothing items to keep them warm and dry. Hopefully, there may even be some snow for them to enjoy in the process!
When we have accumulated snow, the children who wear snow pants, boots, hats, gloves and warm coats will be permitted to play in the snow during recess time. Children who do not have those items will play on the blacktop area only - so they don’t get wet or dirty.
In an effort to improve communications between parents and school, District 117 has instituted a telephone broadcast system that enables school personnel to notify all households and parents by phone within minutes of an emergency or unplanned event that causes early dismissal, school cancellation or late start. This service is provided by SchoolMessenger, which specializes in school-to-parent communications. District 117 will continue to report school closings due to snow or weather on WGN radio and TV stations and will use this system as an overlay to the public announcement.
When used, the service will simultaneously call all listed phone numbers in our parent contact list and will deliver a recorded message from a school administrator. The service will deliver the message to both live answer and answering machines. No answers and busy signals will be automatically retried twice in 15 minute intervals after the initial call.
Note:
- This requires NO registration by the parent on the SchoolMessenger website.
- To be included in this service, it is imperative that you let your school know any changes in your phone number.
- All information and contact numbers are strictly secure and confidential and are only used for the purposes described herein.

Parents will be notified in the event of an emergency closing during school hours. In the event that students would be dismissed early due to an emergency, students should know where to go if parents are not home. Please have this conversation with your child so they are prepared if this emergency plan was ever to be instituted.
5Essentials Parent Survey
We ask that you please take a few moments to complete the 5Essentials PARENT SURVEY for Glen Oaks School.
This survey is to be completed by parents, guardians, or other caregivers with a child in grades pre-kindergarten through 12. The parent survey is available in both English and Spanish and only takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
If you have more than one child and they attend the same school, you may elect to participate multiple times. For parents with children enrolled in multiple schools, we recommend that they participate in the survey for each school. Only one parent per household may participate in the survey.
Please note, parents DO have the option to leave their email address so that a confirmation of survey completion can be sent upon submission of the parent survey supplement. That text box can be left blank if you do not want to provide or have an email address.
The survey window closes February 15, 2019.
As always, we appreciate your participation and feedback in helping make Glen Oaks School a great place to learn and grow!
