OPS EXPANDS NALOXONE PROGRAM TO ALL SCHOOLS & SUPPORT BUILDINGS
As of early October, the Olathe Public Schools has expanded its supply of Naloxone (commonly known as NARCAN) and is now stocking the medication at all support buildings and elementary schools, in addition to middle and high and schools. Naloxone is a nasal spray medication that can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose and can be safely and easily administered to individuals of all ages.
Most opioid overdoses are accidental and can happen anywhere. As you may know, the Drug Enforcement Agency has warned that colorful pills have entered the counterfeit drug market, with the intent of making the pills look like candy. Although it is very rare for elementary school students to come in contact with opioids, Olathe Public Schools is committed to being prepared for any emergency situation. Our top priority is and always will be the safety of our students and staff.
Our school nurse is trained on how to recognize the signs and symptoms of opioid intoxication and how to deliver NARCAN quickly and effectively. The medication, like all emergency medications, will be kept in a locked location. It is important to note that NARCAN is safe for individuals of all ages, and there are no adverse side effects or harm to users if NARCAN is administered unnecessarily. However, it can be lifesaving if an individual is experiencing an opioid overdose.
If emergency medication, such as NARCAN or Epinephrine is administered, we will call 911 and our district emergency management system will be activated. While we hope to never use NARCAN, we believe having it available in our building is a good addition to the list of life-saving medications we already carry in case of an emergency.
Questions regarding the Naloxone program can be directed to the Director of Health Services at 913-780-8231.

OPS EQUITY HOTLINE
Olathe students deserve and should expect equity and inclusion in our schools. Students experiencing instances of inequity are encouraged to report incidents and events where they feel inequity exists so that district personnel are aware and can follow up. Olathe Public Schools has established the OPS Equity Hotline Number. Students and parents may call this number to report incidents they feel need the awareness and attention of district officials. The number is 913-780-7995.
Individuals may also email the office of Diversity and Engagement directly. Click here to email diversity@olatheschools.org.
