- Second Steps has begun. Kim L. sent out a schedule for us all to follow. The goal is for all staff to be focusing on the topic throughout the week (using the vocabulary and highlighting examples). Click here for the schedule.
- Friday, October 6, is the first PD Day of the year. It is a 2-hr Delayed Opening. This is a self-directed day for you to work on an area of growth chosen by you.
- Tuesday, October 10 (this is a different date than listed on the Assessment & Reporting Calendar), All Goals related paperwork needs to be in EdReflect and Submitted for approval. They can be edited as needed. October 31- all goals meetings must be completed and goals closed and signed.
- As schedules continue to be finalized, we continue to adapt. Please click here for the latest Recess Supervision Schedule. Thank you all for your cooperation and support.
Opportunities to Lead & Learn
An Opportunities to Lead & Learn board will be outside Jenna's office. This is where you will post topics you wish to learn more about AND topics you are willing to share your learning/facilitate a conversation. The Leadership Team will then review and arrange offerings for the 4th Tuesday of each month.
Things to remember:
- Review the schedule carefully and have a few ideas of where you wish to go and know where they are happening
- Teams can certainly divide up and share learning at PLCs
- The facilitator will determine if there is enough people attending to proceed. In the event an offering cancels, simply go to another.
- We will be repeating topics as some other topics may be more timely forcing difficult choices. That is why your postings on the board is important for planning.
- Fill out your Opportunity to Lead & Learn Journal which will be uploaded for midyear and end of year goals meetings (click here if you still need the journal).
Staff News!
Goal Setting (this section is in lieu of a meeting/read carefully)
There have been some questions regarding goals so I am leaving this section here as a continued resource. Most questions can be answered in the Evaluation Plan which you have been emailed. You can also click here for the most updated copy of the plan.
You have already received your copy of the Newtown Public Schools Evaluation and Support Plan via email. This week I will share with you the phase that you are currently in. You should then review the plan for your responsibilities and time-lines.
I will also be opening FAKE meeting dates in EdReflect to make the Goal Setting links available to you. You will need to see Donna to schedule a real meeting in late September/early October.
Some Key Reminders:
- All paperwork MUST be in EdReflect and submitted for approval by October 10 (can still be edited as needed).
- Goal Setting Conference must occur before October 31 (this is the date they must be signed and closed).
- Can be collaborative
- Best when overlapping and/or connected (area of focus, SLO, PLC discussions, Team goal, etc)
- Must be worthy of a years worth of work, effort (detailed Action Plans)
- Expectations should be high (for you and for your students)
- Beyond what you are currently doing
I have prepared a one-sheet (Goal Setting Process Overview) for you that I think will be helpful. It reviews each section that you need to fill out with suggestions and ideas strait from the Evaluation and Support Plan. It also includes THIS Year's Hawley Parent and Student Goal Focus.
As always, feel free to see me with any questions or concerns.
Food for Thought: ARTICLE
In the spirit of Goal Setting Season, I share this article about setting High Unrealistic Goals.
When we leave our comfort zone, great things happen. You'll know a goal is high when you panic over how you possibly will attain it. THAT is how new paths, new learning (and Great Things) occur.
Our students deserve our best, which must adapt, change and grow!

“You have to set goals that are almost out of reach.
If you set a goal that is attainable without much work or thought,
you are stuck with something below your true talent and potential.”
