Please Welcome FIDDA!!!!
As many of you know, Sassy retired last April. Sassy was Horizon’s first Facility Dog that began working with me in September 2010. When Sassy retired, I was fortunate enough to be able to continue to provide Horizon with a Facility Dog that same month. Fidda is our current Facility Dog here at Horizon. Fidda is a 2-year-old female black Labrador retriever who both lives and works with me. Fidda is part of the Silver Litter, 6 black labs. Fidda means silver in Arabic.
Fidda was trained through KSDS, just like Sassy. I attended their 6-day team training session last April before bringing Fidda to Horizon. This intense course covered all aspects of caring and working with a KSDS Facility Dog. Fidda and I completed both the KSDS and Assistance Dogs International requirements and certification evaluations. During our week of training, Fidda and I were fortunate to attend lectures and training sessions alongside Guide and Service Dogs, as well as a Courthouse Dog. This was such an incredible learning experience!
KSDS Facility Dogs are specially trained to work with a professional in the field of education, counseling, medicine, rehabilitation, retirement and specialty agencies. When these dogs are in a school setting, they can model appropriate behavior, teach positive interaction, interrupt hyperactivity and perform many tasks.
Fidda and I together try to help students in any way we can. We will be at the October 9th PTA Meeting if you would like to meet us and learn more about KSDS. You can also visit the KSDS website at ksds.org.
