Grand Forks Central High School - October 1, 2020
Midterm: Time for a Progress Check, Game Plan
I hope this finds all of you healthy! We continue to emphasize and monitor our safety practices at Central and have been very impressed with the diligence of our students in maintaining those practices.
Soon, GFC parents/guardians of our face-to-face learners will receive a short presentation from me in their email. It is the same presentation that will be shared with students the first week in October. I don't want to spoil the ending, but the content is really a series of questions: How are students doing at the midterm of Quarter 1? How are remote learning days working for students? What changes need to be made in student routines at home to ensure success? The message will also be this: There will be no "grade bumps" at the end of this quarter or semester. Grades at the end of the term will be completely based upon student work products that demonstrate mastery of content.
We want students to understand that remote learning days are, as the name implies, learning days that require a mindset similar to face-to-face learning days. Please view the presentation and assist students putting consistent and proven practices into place at home - a game plan for success!
Lastly, ask your student to log in to PowerSchool and show you their grades - if they haven't already volunteered to do so!
Thanks for your continued support!
Onward Central!
Mr. Jon Strandell, Principal
Staying Connected Through PowerSchool
Grand Forks Public School parents are provided a PowerSchool account to help them stay connected with their student's progress. With PowerSchool, you can view the daily announcements and receive updates about your student's grades, assignments, attendance and more. You can access all of your students who attend Grand Forks Public Schools (not just GFC) with one account (referred to as a single sign on account).
If you would like to receive automatic email notifications from PowerSchool, log into your account and indicate which reports you would like to receive under "email notifications". You can also select how often you wish to receive the reports (daily, weekly, etc.).
If you have forgotten your user name or password, there is a link to reset those on the log in page for PowerSchool (below).
If you have never created a PowerSchool parent account for your students, please contact the main office for assistance.

Open Communication
behavioral health. Whether it’s everyday topics like friends and school, or more serious topics like substance use, anxiety, or depression, it’s never too early to start the conversation. As your kids grow, your conversations may change, but they will always be centered on keeping them happy, healthy, and safe. Keep your conversations relaxed, friendly, non-judgmental, and genuine. AP Students
ACT
We received disappointing news this July from ACT, in that there will not be opportunities to retake section tests. Instead, students must take the entire ACT (without writing) if they wish to improve their scores. Go to ACT.org to register. Please note that many colleges and universities do not require ACT scores for admission for the 2021-22 school year. Please check the websites of schools you are considering. The North Dakota Academic Scholarship requirements include a minimum of 24 composite on ACT. Students who are interested in this scholarship should consider registering for an ACT test. It is strongly suggested students review sample ACT questions on ACT.org. This is one of the best ways to prepare. If you don’t understand a question/answer, please seek out your teachers for help.
Interested in practicing and preparing for the ACT?
PSAT INFORMATION
Sophomores and Juniors interested in getting some practice for standardized
testing like the ACT and SAT may register for the PSAT (Practice ACT) in the
Counseling Department by October 2, 2020, (or until practice books and tests run
out.) When taken in the junior year, the PSAT also qualifies as the National Merit
Scholarship Qualifying Test. The cost of this test is $20 and will be held 8:00 am on
Wednesday, October 14 at GFC. Please see Ms. Bailey in the Counseling
Department if you have questions, or Mrs. Manske to register for this exam.
Please make checks payable to GFPS.
FAFSA INFORMATION
Go to https://fsaid.ed.gov/ to begin the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process by getting ID numbers for students and parents. The FAFSA should be completed as soon after October 1st as possible. Students may get a worksheet in the counseling office that indicates the information that is needed to complete the FAFSA.
