SEL Weekly Classroom Tip - Why Morning Meeting?
Why Morning Meeting?
-Priti Ahuja (pahuja@dallasisd.org)
“Either you run the day, or the day runs you.” When teachers are asked what they do in the morning to ensure that their day will go well, many say that they drink coffee, practice mindfulness, come in early to organize, or stay late the night before to prepare. Often, I ask, are students able to do any of those things to prepare themselves for success? Probably not. They rely on us to do so. A daily morning meeting practice promotes a climate of trust, academic growth and positive behavior. It consists of a greeting, sharing, activity and morning message, which has the following benefits:
Psychological Safety
Create a classroom climate where students feel safe and have a sense of importance & belonging. We are wired for connection, and when our psychological safety needs are met, we are ready for a deeper connection to learning.
Relationships
Enhance connections among students and the teacher, not just between the teacher and his/her students. Morning meeting provides a platform for meaningful peer to peer connections. Students develop empathy by learning about each other and laughing together.
Social and Emotional Skills
Build social and emotional skills (respect, communication, impulse control) as well as academic skills in a fun, interactive and learner centered manner.
Positive Behavior
Reduce attention seeking behavior and relational aggression. Students begin their day with a sense of importance, an opportunity to be heard and seen, and well as with play, reducing the chances of seeking these through the day.
Morning Meeting Activity - Sharing
If you have been practicing whole group sharing as a part of your morning meeting, you may have tried sentence stem sharing, or pairing up to share, which allows for everyone in the classroom to participate. As your students develop increasing skills in self-regulation, listening and speaking, they may be ready for dialogue share. In this form of sharing, a couple of students share each day and then ask classmates for questions or comments. Teachers step back and let students lead, keeping a checklist or calendar to keep track. Typically, this is an open share, with no prompt. Here is an example from a kindergarten class: Kinder Dialogue Share
